DESIGN OF WOOD STRUCTURES

Course Outcomes

Course Outcomes
Be able to design shear walls
Be able to design wood diaphragms
Lesson Outcomes
Be able to design shearwalls
Assume:
• DF-L framing
• Lateral loads are
strength level
• Tension chord in shear
panel 2 is attached to
shear panel 1 and is not
taken directly to
foundation
(2) The shear wall is to be designed for force transfer around the
opening. The ASD-level seismic lateral load on the wall is 6000 lb.
Determine the unit shears in each of the eight panel segments, the
maximum chord forces on lines 5 and 8, and the maximum
boundary forces on lines 2/3 and 6/7.
(3) The shear wall shown below is to be designed as a perforated shear
wall. The ASD-level wind lateral load on the wall is 4000 lb. 15/32-in wood
structural panels are used for sheathing. Determine:
• Panel nailing requirements
• Panel chord forces
• Unit shear in full height shearwall segments
• Unit uplift force at bottom of full-height shearwall segements
Calculate Co using SDPWS equations 4.3-5 and 4.3-6 AND compare to
Co value from Table 4.3.3.5.
