DESIGN OF WOOD STRUCTURES

Course Outcomes

Course Outcomes
Be able to design connections
Be able to design wood diaphragms
Lesson Outcomes
Be able to apply the yield limit equations to nailed connections
Be able to apply adjustment factors to nailed connections
Fasteners
Example 1
(wind)

Design the connection tie between the

first- and second-story shearwall chords
for the right-end wall using ASD
procedures. A 12-gage ASTM A653 Grade
33 steel strap with 8d box nails is to be
used. Lumber is dry DF-L that will remain
dry in service. Normal temperatures Strap thickness: 0.105 in
apply. (Ignore resisting forces in wall). Strap Fu: 45 ksi

The building shown has stud walls with a double 2× top plate around the entire building. Lateral
seismic forces to the horizontal diaphragm include a transverse load of wET =190 lb/ft and a
longitudinal load of wEL = 210 lb/ft. Splices in the double top plate for the longitudinal wall are to be
designed for the horizontal diaphragm chord force or collector force (whichever is larger) using
ASD procedures. Lumber is dry DF-L that will remain dry in service. Normal temperatures apply.

Example

Compare the strength of a single 8d common nail in a laterally loaded toenail connection in DF-L
to a single 8d box nail in a similar connection. Assume wind/seismic load and normal
temperature and moisture conditions apply.
