ASD & LRFD Design Philosophies

Allowable Stress Design (ASD)

Compare allowable stresses of a material to the
working stresses resulting from service loads
A single factor of safety is applied to the nominal
design value to arrive at the allowable design value
Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD)
Adjusted capacities are compared to effects of
factored loads
Factors are applied to both the resistance of a
member and the loads on structure to reflect
uncertainty and consequences of failure
ASD & LRFD Design Philosophies

The NDS was originally based on ASD

In 2005, NDS was revised to include both
ASD and LRFD
Use of LRFD can sometimes seem a little
awkward with NDS
In this class we will use both methods
