1. We need to nd the volume of the solid obtained by rotating the region enclosed by y = x3 , y = 9x, and
x> 0 about the line y = 0.

Now, since x > 0, we are only concerned with the area bounded by y = x3 and y = 9x in the rst quadrant.

Now, let us nd the points of intersection of the two curves rst

For nding the points of intersection, we can set the two x3 and 9x equal to each other and solve for x as
follows

But, since we are only concerned with x > 0, let us ignore the value x = -3 .

Thus, the two x vlaues at which the two curves intersect are

and

Now, let us consider a narrow vertical strip of width 'dx' at a distance of 'x' units from the Y-axis, as shown
in the gure below. If we visualize this strip being rotated about the line y = 0 , it would look like a washer
as shown in the gure. Now, if we can nd the volume of this washer and then add up the volumes of an
in nite number of such very very narrow washers between x = 0 and x = 3, we will get the volume of the
entire solid.

Please nd below a rough sketch of the given curves

Now, the area of the face of this washer would be

where R is the outer radius

and 'r' is the inner radius.

Now, from the gure we see that,

R = 9x

and r = x3

Substituting these values in dA , we get,

Now, the volume of this elemental washer would be

Now, if we integrate dV over x = 0 to x = 3, we will get the rquired volume.

Thus, the volume of the solid V is

V=

cubic units (rounded to the nearest hundreth)

Thus, the volume is approximately equal to cubic units.

2. We need to nd the volume of the solid obtained by rotating the region enclosed by x = 0 , x = 1, y = 0, y
= 2 + x9 about the Y axis.

Now, the region bounded by x = 0, x = 1, y = 0, and y = 2 + x9 would lie in the rst quadrant. Now, let us
consider a very narrow vertical strip of width 'dx' at a distance of 'x' units from the Y axis. If we visualize this
strip being rotated about the Y axis, it will look like a cylindrical shell ( which is hollow on the inside) .

Please refer to the graph below

Now, let us try to nd the volume dV of this elemental shell.

The curved surface area of this shell would equal , where 'r' is the radius and 'h' is the height of the
cylindrical shell.

From, the graph, we can see that the radius in this case will be the distance of the strip from the Y axis.
Thus, radius = x units.

The height of the shell would equal the height of the vertical strip. Now, the height of the strip will equal 2
+ x9 for that particular 'x'.

So, the volume of the shell would equal,

dV = (curved surface area) * (thickness)

Now, the thickness of the sheel is equal to the width 'dx' of the vertical strip.

Thus,

Now, if we add up the in nitesimal volumes of an in nite number of such shells between x = 0 and x = 1,
we will get the volume V of the entire solid.

Hence,

V=

       cubic units

Thus, the volume of the solid will equal cubic units.
