Learning Reflection 9: Was that Harassment?

This review is about an article “Was That harassment?” written by J Niel Bearden. This

article is about whether one should respond to a harassment issue. The author starts with

explaining a situation which happened in a company regarding their position hike and further

career development and opportunities. Jackson, who is a salesperson, had high hopes about a

position which has much potential than his present job, similarly there are other colleagues

Rainer and Teaira in the race. Since the job is a salesperson Rainer and Teaira are in much

advantage than him. They supposed to have a meeting with their CEO. While waiting for the

Teaira, Jackson and Rainer were a having a conversation about the selection process and a

comment was made by Reiner about himself, right before the meeting Jackson joked about the

comment intending to Teaira and everyone who heard it kept quiet.

The meeting was going on Rainer glanced at Teaira and she looked upset to him. The

meeting ended and Jackson left from the room. Rainer asked her whether she was ok or not she

replied by saying something about the meeting but not anything about the situation before

meeting. Rainer could not stand it and tried to report it to the human resource department.

Suzznne was a successful employee among the best. Rainer confirmed about whether to report

the situation to HR by quickly making a call to his friend. Based on the advice he went to see the

HR and explained everything to the HR about what happened between them and was worrying

about the keep his identity anonymous, since the situation happened between three it was

obvious they will notice it. Suzanne had seen things like these in the past and was aware about

the protocol.

Later Suzanne asked Teaira to see her. Teaira was surprised and since the notice came

from HR she was a bit worried. Suzanne told Teaira about the complaint. She explained about

the company policy about how serious they take about complaint. But Teaira had questions about

what kind actions would be taken towards the complaint. Suzanne tried to explain her that no one

in the company can talk about other employees discriminately, also they take the complaint

seriously and start gathering more information regarding the complaint. Suzanne advised Teaira

to do the same. But Teaira was confused, though she was happy when the company first

announced about the policy on serious the consequences would be when some one was reported

for this kind of situations. Teira left to her desk was thinking how tough would be to hang around

all men colleagues for other woman and also she was thinking about the situation where she will

be okay to leave and do not drag it anymore. If she let it go for now later when she sees Jackson

would defend himself rather than giving apology to her. The author asks a question whether

Teaira should proceed with the matter ahead or not?

In modern world most of the females are trying to work equally, compete equally with

men, but some men can not take it instead they try to press them down by discriminating or in

any manner. I believe that any kind of work can be divided to anyone especially when working

in companies there are no things such as female suitable jobs or men suitable jobs everything can

be done by anyone as long as the task given is finished. Every work has its own work

environment and while working with other they try to finish the work given in harmony. I

believe that no one can be discriminated by others and it should not be tolerated. In my personal

opinion harassment is not something when people say something to one, if the person who is

taking them is not comfortable with it they step up and report it. By doing so one save anther

person by making them not facing the same thing they faced. In the above situation I believe that

Teaira should go ahead and proceed with the complaint and teach the person a lesson that he is

not allowed to pass those king of comments not for only her but to anyone. This can help the

company to build good work culture by making sure they are comfortable to finish their given

work. Jackson should face the consequences, this might not be first time for him to pass these

kind of comments towards others he should know that even he himself was there in opposite side

he would not have taken it jokingly.
