DISCUSSION

The property of material is to resist impact is known as toughness. The movement of

vehicles will make the aggregates on the road will break down into the smaller pieces. In this
experiment, the aggregates are tested before the material used in road construction. To
calculate aggregate impact value, formula below is required:

Aggregate Impact Value = Weight of Fraction Passing 2.36 mm Sieve X 100

Weight of Total Material Taken

After calculating the aggregate impact value, we can determine the toughness of
aggregate. Based on the data obtained which is 18.2%, the toughness of concrete is strong.
So, this aggregate is suitable to use in road construction.

Then to calculate required load, use the formula:

4000
AIV

The required load in this experiment is 219.78kN.

CONCLUSION
The strength of coarse aggregate is assessed by aggregate crushing test, the aggregate
value provides the relative measure of resistance to crushing under gradually applied
compressive load.

Lesser the aggregate crushing value greater will be the resistance to crushing under
gradually applied compressive load.

Resistance of the aggregates to impact is termed as toughness. Aggregates used in the

pavement should be able to resist the effect caused by the jumping of the steel-tired wheels
from one particle to another at different levels cause severe impact on the aggregates.
