The Power of Social Media
Social Media has the potential to effect social change. It can be an
environment to encourage, communicate, share stories, get opinions, and
exercise the freedom to say what people want. With social media, you can
deliver your message to more people quickly; it is free and accessible.
Social media can:
1. Promote social change or advance reforms.
2. Support social justice or create social movements.
3. Access to those who are impoverished, hurting, left out, or victims.
4. Stop bullying or discrimination.
5. Help during calamities or tragedies.
6. Allow people to have responsibility to engage as citizen.
Digital Citizenship
Digital Citizens are “those who use the Internet regularly and
effectively” as defined by K. Mossberger, et al. Digital Citizens are
generally skillful and knowledgeable about the use of the Internet through
mobile phones, web ready devices, and computers to intermingle with the
government, private, and public groups. Digital citizenship starts when you
open an email account, join social media sites, buy or sell merchandise or
services online. Beyond these, according to T.H. Marshall, online
citizenship has traditions:
1. Liberalism – a political philosophy founded on the ideas of liberty
and equality.
2. Republicanism – ideology of being citizen and the people are the
sovereign power.
3. Ascriptive Hierarchy – no one person or organization is in control
over the internet.

ICT will be able to monitor remote and poor areas now that
technology is accessible and affordable to many. Empowered volunteers
can take photos and videos as well as write assessments to headquarters
for further data analysis and tasked whether the various advocacies for
people or environment are improving the people’s lives or the
environment.
1. ICT
Computers were created to facilitate engineering and scientific
calculations. Then, gradually the computers’ usefulness found its
way into business and industry. Lately, computers have reached a
point that they have also become common learning tools, finding
their way into schools and homes to accomplish tasks, and obtain
knowledge and information.
Online education and learning are now common both for the
formal and the self-help students. All these became available due to
the advances in computer technology, internet communication and
educational innovations, Computers have been in a big boom to
education due to its effectiveness and efficiency.
2. Self
As an individual learner in school or at home, the student now
has access to enormous educational resources in advancing and
learning more than what the regular classroom can offer. The
students have now in their fingertips the resources that were not
available without ICT, and the efficiency and ease in accessing them
has never been as fast as today. The challenge today is the self-
discipline and self-management of young students in the use of ICT,
since computers also tend to attract them to entertainment and
games, which distracts them from learning.
3. Society
ICT as a means to improve the quality of community life is
real and feasible. An effective ICT execution should provide the
following benefits.
▪ Better income and business climate
▪ Superior health system
▪ Improved educational system
▪ Constant information campaign
▪ Participative decision-making for constituents
▪ Equitable sharing and utilization of resources
▪ Effective feedback mechanism to enhance government
services

internet and those who cannot;
b. Reducing levels of education and understanding due to the vast
amount of incorrect and misleading information;
c. Causing moral and ethical problems due to the nature of some of
