Dollar, Five Hundred Dollars, Ten Dollars, Twenty Dollars, Five Dollars, One Dollar.
Procedures

Engage: 10 minutes

The teacher will place a chart on the board containing the different Jamaican coins and notes.

The teacher will point on each money on the chart and ask students to say the name of the

coins and notes then randomly choose a student to write the value on the board.

Expected Answers

One Dollar ($1.00)

Five Dollar ($5.00)

Ten Dollar ($10.00)

Twenty Dollar ($20.00)

Fifty Dollar ($50.00)

One Hundred Dollar ($100.00)

Five Hundred Dollar ($500.00)

One Thousand Dollar ($1000.00)

Five Thousand Dollar ($5000.00)

The teacher will ask the students what they think the topic will be for today and they are

expected to say “Money”.

Skills: Critical thinking skills, knowing to identify the different types of money.

Students will know the name of the different money in their country and their value.

Explore: 15 minutes

Students will form five groups and each group will be given a name based on a fruit and five

minutes to complete the tasks. Each group will be given three problems to add and subtract to

find the sum and difference of money they will get. The first group to indicate that they are

finish with all three problems correctly calculated will receive a token. Each group will read

their money aloud that they got and say the sum when it is added.
Group 1 ( Banana)

1. $20.00 + $200.00=

2. $50.00+$50.00+50.00=

3. $5000.00-$1000.00=

2. $100.00+$70.00=

3. $5000.00-$4000.00=

Skills: Working Cooperatively

Students will know how to find the sum and difference of money.

Explain: 15 minutes

Individual Work
After completing the previous activity each student will be given five (5) minutes to write in

their notebooks a short note to their friend telling him or her about the name of the different

Jamaican coins and notes and include the value of each.

Teacher will clear up any misconceptions so that every student can distinguish between the

different Jamaican coins and notes, know how to write the value of each and how to find the

sum of money when put together.

Elaborate: 10 minutes

Individual Work

Afterwards the students will be given worded problems that will be written on the board by

the teacher for them to write and complete in their books.

ACTIVITY

1. Dawn bought the following items from the canteen:

1 Orange juice for $70.00

1 Patty for $110.00

a). How much money did Dawn spend?

b). How much change did Dawn received if she gave the cashier $200.00?

2. Mary has $5000.00. She purchased a bag for $1000.00 and a blouse for $850.00.

a). How much money does Mary have remaining?

b). How much money did Mary spend in all?

Evaluation: 10 minutes

Students will be given a worksheet see to complete to see how well they had grasped the

topic Money.

Mathematical Practices:
Which mathematical practice did my students experience during this lesson?
1. (. ) Makes sense of problems and perseveres in solving them
2. (. ) Reason abstractly and quantitively
3. () Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
4. ( .) Model with mathematics
5. () Use appropriate tools
6. ( .) Attend to precision
7. ( .) Look for and make use of structure
8. (. ) Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
Teacher’s reflection
After the lesson was completed it was evident that the higher learners within the class had no

difficulties to add and subtract money, while the low achievers had a bit of problem. All the

students knew the different types of money that are used within the country. The teacher will

mix the low achievers with the high achievers when it is group work time and ensure that all

group members are working cooperatively together as a group and give the low achievers

different activities from the high achievers.
