Assignment 1

(Each 5 Marks)
1. The power output of an IC engine is measured by a rope brake dynamometer. The
diameter of brake pulley is 700 mm and rope diameter is 25 mm. The load on the tight
side of the rope is 50 kg and spring balance read 50N. The engine is running at 900 rpm
consumes fuel of calorific value of 44000 kJ/kg, at a rate of 4 kg/hr. Calculate i. Brake
specific fuel consumption, ii. Brake thermal Efficiency.
2. What is meant by abnormal combustion? Explain the phenomena of knock in SI engines
and effect of various engine variables on SI engine knock
3. In a laboratory experiment, the following observations were noted during the test of a
four stroke SI engine. Area of indicator diagram = 510 square mm; Length of indicator
diagram = 55mm; spring index = 1.25 bar/mm; Diameter of piston = 120 mm; Length of
stroke = 180 mm; Engine rpm= 480 rpm; Effective brake load = 25 kg; Effective brake
radius = 0.45 m determine Indicated power, brake power and mechanical efficiency.
4. What is meant by delay period? What are the factors that affect it?
