Personal Biographical Factors


• Objective and easily obtained personal characteristics.
• Gender
- Female employees have higher tendency to change job and abstain from work.
• Age
- Positively correlates with performance.
- Negatively correlates with turnover.
- Positively correlates with absenteeism.
- Positively correlates with satisfaction.
- Older workers bring experience, judgment, a strong work ethic, & commitment to quality.
• Education
- Positively correlates with satisfaction and reward expectation.
• Abilities
- Intellectual: Abilities need to perform mental activities, e.g. memory.
- Physical: One’s stamina, manual dexterity, leg strength, and the like, e.g. stamina.
• Marital status
- Married people have fewer absences, less turnover, and more satisfied with their jobs.
• Tenure
- People with job tenure (seniority at a job) are more productive, absent less frequently,
have lower turnover, and are more satisfied.
• Others: Religion, race & ethnicity, sexual orientation, & gender identity.
Personal Psychological Factors
• An individual’s mental characteristics and attributes that are not always observable.
• Perception, personality, attitudes, values, and learning.

Environmental Factors
• Technological change.
• Economic factors: Level of employment opportunities, wage rates, & economic outlook.
• Political situations: E.g. stability.
• Cultural values: E.g. value, the work ethic, & need for achievement motivates.

Organisational Factors
• The characteristics of an organisation:
Physical facilities, organisational structure and design, leadership styles, & reward system.

• Making everybody more aware and sensitive to the needs of others.
- Attracting, selecting, developing, and retaining the diverse employees.
