1 Overview of IACS 17 Bulk Strength

The Bulk Strength panel gives you information about the effect of a damaged hold
according to the IACS “Requirements Concerning Strength of Ship”, Requirement S17.

In that requirement it is assumed that a hold is damaged in such a way that it allows free
inflow of water up to the ship’s water line (taking into account that the water line changes
as water flows into the damaged hold). Any non-liquid cargo in the hold is “drenched”,
i.e. the water inflow is determined by the permeability of the cargo; with liquid cargo a
substitution of that cargo with seawater is assumed.

Version: 1.1

For the point when equilibrium has been reached (i.e. the maximum amount of water
that can flow into the hold has been determined), longitudinal strength calculations are
performed with the new weight of the hold (weight of inflow plus weight of cargo). This
process is repeated for every hold.

The result is a comprehensive analysis of the influence a damaged hold has on the
stability of the vessel, allowing you to distribute loose cargo across the available holds in
such a way that not even in the case of a damaged hold do the bending moments or
shear forces exceed the limits set for the ship.

2 The Individual Information Panels

There are 4 different sub-panels involved a typical bulk strength panel as shown in the
screenshot. These are a summary panel with hold-specific data like the weight of water
taken on in the damaged hold and the worst values occurring, a panel showing the
ship’s longitudinal stress values under the assumption that one of the holds is damaged
and flooded, a panel showing the stress curves for that case and a panel showing the
long section of the ship.

2.1 The Summary Panel

The top-most panel in the example screenshot is the summary panel. It is divided into
two sections. On the left you will find hold-specific data like the weight of the inflow and
the resulting drafts and trim. Circled in red is the hold-selector, a drop-down box from
which you can select which of the holds is assumed flooded:

Version: 1.1

The table on the right side gives you information on the worst overall values and which
hold must be flooded so that they occur. You will also find the drafts for that case in this
table.

2.2 The IACS17 Longitudinal Strength or Stress Values

This panel differs from the “normal” stress values panel (1.2.5.) only in the way that the
data it displays is calculated under the assumption that one of the holds is flooded. To
make it distinguishable from a normal stress values panel, the first line of the table
displays the information which hold is assumed flooded.

2.3 The IACS17 Longitudinal Strength or Stress Curves

Like the stress values, this panel displays stress data on the assumption that one hold is
flooded.

2.4 The IACS 17 Long Section

This differs from the normal long section in that you can only select one hold at the time.
Additionally, the IACS 17 long section works as a hold selector, i.e. if you click on a hold
in the long section, all hold-specific panels will then show the data according to the
selected hold (and the drop-down box in the summary panel will adjust itself
accordingly).

3 Changing Data

3.1 Selecting a Hold

You can select a hold by either choosing it with the hold-selector in the summary panel
as shown in the screenshot:

Or by clicking on the desired hold in the IACS 17 long section:

In both cases the hold-specific information in all open bulk strength panels is updated to
the selected new hold accordingly.

3.2 Changing the Permeability of the Cargo

You can set the permeability of the cargo for each hold separately. To do so, open a
new “Editor for Tanks and Holds” if you don’t currently have one open, select the desired
hold and change the permeability to the desired value.

The valid range of the permeability is from 0.0 (no permeability at all) to 1.0 (total
permeability). For example: 0.6 would represent a permeability of 60 %; if your whole
cargo of, say, 5,000 m³ would be below the waterline, in the case of that hold being
damaged the cargo would be drenched with 3,000 m³ of seawater.

Please keep in mind that a value of 1.0 might be more of a theoretical value; in
requirement S17 the IACS assumes the permeability of empty cargo space to be 0.95
(as of Rev. 6, July 2004).

4 Configuring the Printable Report

4.1 Adding Bulk Strength Results to the Report

To add the results of the IACS S17 test to the printable report, please open the “Report
Setup” dialog from the Menu (“Report” -> “Report Setup”) as shown in the screenshot.

This opens the Report Manager which will look like this:

Again, the list of selected report elements in the right-hand pane might vary in your
case; just make sure that IACS17 Bulk Strength is part of it.

Now close the window with the list of report elements by clicking the “ok”-button to return
to the “Configure Report” dialog. The IACS 17 Bulk Strength Test results are now
included in the report.

4.2 Configuring Which Bulk Strength Data Appears in the Report

If the “Configure Report” dialogue is not open, open it by the steps outlined in section
4.1. Make sure that “IACS17 Bulk Strength” appears in the list of elements and is
checked; if it does not appear in the list proceed with the steps in section 4.1 to add it.

Now select “IACS17 Bulk Strength” as is shown in the screenshot, being careful not to
uncheck the checkbox in the process:

Click on the “Configure…” button that should now be enabled to open the bulk strength
report configuration dialog:

Please note: the number of holds and their names might vary in your case.

If you open this dialog the first time, it will show the default settings: the summary
information will appear in the report as well as the weight of inflow, drafts and trim, and
longitudinal stress values for all holds.

You can now change these settings to your preference.

4.2.1 Selecting Individual Holds

Depending on the situation, you might want to restrict the amount of information
included in the report so as not to inflate it unduly. For example, you might want to
concentrate on the forward hold as this is the most vulnerable hold to water ingress
according to a study commissioned by the IACS in 1994 (IACS Briefing No. 5,
September 1997).

To achieve this, you would check the first hold (“No.1 Cargo Hold” in the example
screenshot) and uncheck all the others as the following screenshot shows:

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Bulkstrength.net

Version: 1.1

Note that in this example we have also opted to include the graphical representation of
the stress values.

Another example would be a case where we want to include the longitudinal stress
values as well as the water intake for all holds, but nothing else:

4.2.2 Including The Summary With the Worst Values Into The Report

To include a summary with the worst values over all holds, you have to check the
checkbox labelled “Show summary with worst values”:

This summary is included only once, at the very beginning of the bulk strength part of
the report, and would look like this:

The worst values table is included in the report by default.

Version: 1.1

4.2.3 Including The Weight of The Inflow In The Report

To include a table with the weight of the seawater that has flown into the damaged hold
and the new drafts and trim resulting from the added weight, you have to check the
checkbox labelled “Show water intake, drafts and trim”:

The table thus generated would look like this:

One table would be included for every selected hold (see 4.2.1) and would precede the
longitudinal stress curves and values should those be included as well.

The option to include the weight of inflow in the report is checked by default.

Version: 1.1

4.2.4 Including The Longitudinal Strength Curves In The Report

This option enables you to include a graphical representation of the data for each
selected hold.

Again, you include this information by checking the relevant checkbox, the one labelled
“Show longitudinal strength curves” as shown here:

Here is an example screenshot of what would be included in the report:

4.2.5 Including The Longitudinal Strength Values In The Report

The last option in this section enables you to get a detailed table with a frame-by-frame
list of all relevant stress values for the selected flooded holds. You include it by checking
the “Show longitudinal strength values” checkbox as in this example:

Version: 1.1

The table would look like the next screenshot (for brevity not the whole table is shown),
depending on which columns you have configured for this table (see the next section on
how to do this):

The longitudinal strength values are included in the report by the default settings; if you
do not want to include them you have to uncheck the option explicitly.

4.2.5.1 Configuring The Appearance of The Strength Values Table

You can adapt the table with the longitudinal strength values to your needs by
configuring what columns appear in the table. To do this click on the button “Select
Columns…”:

Please note: this button is only enabled if you have checked the “Show longitudinal
strength values” checkbox; if that option is not selected, the “Select Columns…” button
is also not enabled:

Version: 1.1

The dialogue that appears when you click the button is simple enough:

What you will see is a list of available columns (the one you see may differ from this
example) with a checkbox for each column. Those columns where the checkbox is
ticked will appear in the report while the others are omitted.

You can select any number and combination of columns with one restriction: you must
select at least one column; otherwise you will see the following error:

Version: 1.1

Once you have made your selection, the “OK” button brings you back to the main
bulkstrength report configuration dialogue; if you want to discard the changes you have
made simply click “Cancel”.

The default button will set the visible columns to a predefined standard selection.

4.3 Possible Errors and Warnings During Configuration

4.3.1 The “No data will appear” Error

If you don’t check any of the checkboxes, you will receive this warning:

While in theory it would be possible not to include bulk strength data in the report by un-
checking all the options, the more sensible way to achieve this would be to exclude
IACS17 Bulk Strength from the list of elements that appear in the report completely.

4.3.2 “You have not selected what hold-specific data you want”

This warning informs you that you have selected one or more individual holds but did not
check any of the three options that determine what hold-specific data should be shown
(water intake, stress values or stress curves).

After accepting the warning by clicking the “OK” button, you should either check at least
one of the options mentioned above (water intake, stress values or stress curves) or any
combination of them, or uncheck the individual holds (if, for instance, you just want the
worst values to appear in the report).

4.3.3 “You must select at least one hold…”

You will see this warning if you have selected any one of the options including individual
hold data (water intake, strength values or curves), but didn’t also select at least one
individual hold.

To get rid of this warning click “OK” then select at least one individual hold.
