SOMETHING PERSONAL
Hi, to those who do not know me
yet, my name is Matthew Chardin
Ang, section manager of System En-
gineering Section. Let me begin with
a quick background of my life, you
can call me “Matt”, a father of two
adorable boys and husband to a
wonderful woman. I grew-up in a
happy but struggling family from
Matthew Chardin Ang the province of Antique. I was in
grade school when our family
moved to Metro Manila with hope
to find a better life.

Little did we realize, the hostility of the city will hold us to the same struggling state we left in the province.
With my parents’ limited income, the situation went from bad to worse. My 3 sisters and I were studying
and self-supporting at the same time, fortunately, our parents resilience and guidance kept us on track until
we all finished our studies and started to make a life of our own. This experiences cultivated some values
and mindsets that made the person that I am today.
After spending more than 12 years with MHPS-TS, I feel very privileged to be writing this message to share
my story. I began my journey December 1, 2005, and have spent the past decade with one goal in mind—
to improve, to improve myself, the people around me, the organization, and the company. Every time I do
something, be it 3D modelling, 2D detailing, conceptualizing systems, or programming new ones, at the end
it has to improve something otherwise I’m missing the mark. This is a personal commitment that guides me
over the years.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF MY MTS HISTORY
I started my career in MHPS-TS as CAD- Operator for Piping Support Design. Back then many 3D models are
static, mainly used for Interference checking or presentation only, design calculations are done on different
spreadsheets, parts number are manually assigned, and 2D extracted drawings are as good as starting from
nothing. I find this situation as an opportunity to improve. I started to teach myself computer-programming
during break times and immediately implement those learnings by creating functional programs from sim-
ple Excel macros, Microstation customized tools, to AutoCAD LISPs commands. I never taught that those
simple innovations can actually help not only me but my colleagues as well. From there systems after sys-
tems are given to me to create. Because of the growing demand a specific group for System Developments
under Power Plant division is established. While there is still lot to be done I can say that MTS’ system has
come way better than before. 2 Communique July 2018

Fortunately, we have seen much change over the past 4 years.

 We have grown our workforce and have embraced diversity and work-life balance.
 We have become the choice to develop solutions not only for MTS but for MHPS as well.
 We have expanded our identity in MHPS.
 Our opinion in decision making matters.

Fast forward today we have become not only a team but a “Family”, I can say that the best System I have devel-
oped for MTS is not found in our computers. It is the System Engineering Section itself.
Thanks to the people who closely worked, believed, and trusted my lead despite of my limitations. I could have
not done it without them, especially the SES members.

What makes us?

While this change brings positive effect, it is important to note the unspoken values that results to it, Excellence,
Leadership, Integrity & Transparency, and Work-life Balance.
 Excellence: Always ask if this is the best you can offer, is this the best solution? Is this the best practice? With
this mindset a wide range of possibilities to learn and improve will open, that eventually leads to delivering
the best product for our customers.
 Leadership: Everyone is a leader. My goal in leading is to create leaders not followers so each voice must be
heard, I believe that the best source of information for new ways and means are those in the front line. If we
can give them the chance to lead and support their great ideas the organization will always progress.

3 Communique July 2018

 Integrity & Transparency: Be responsible to accept mistakes, encourage transparency, and never com-
promise truth, to look good. There is always a good side in every bad situation, hiding the dust under
our carpets does not make the house clean, In fact it may bring more harm in the long run. Integrity
must be kept once trust is broken the restoration will be very minimal to nothing. On the other hand,
bringing our mistakes into the light will help us understand what went wrong and what solutions
should be done to improve in the future.
 Work-life Balance: While it has been a notion that you cannot bring personal life into your professional
life, it is merely impossible to many. We have to recognize that in the first place we become profession-
al because our personal life inspires us to be one. Thus, we cannot separate the two. Give time to what
makes you happy, build joyful memories, play, dance, sing, celebrate life with your family and friends,
less stress equals better output.
A New Season
On May this year a major reorganization is implemented. We are joined with other sections forming the
new Digital Engineering Division. With a goal to help transform MTS to a full-pledged EPC company by
building a reliable Engineering platform. The task is great, but looking ahead, as technology is progressing
in a very fast phase, we want to assure that MTS will cope with these changes. SES will focus on acceler-
ating the execution of our systems both for development and administration while continuing to build the
skills of our members—in helping our clients share knowledge and create innovation and in bringing more
positive change to the company in which we work and live.
I am incredibly excited about this journey and truly believe the best for MHPS-TS is yet to come.
A Testament of faith
Let me end with a short testimony. Back in the university, I really don’t like programming. Unfortunately
for me, programming happened to be one of our minor subjects. I hate it so much that I failed twice and
have to take remedial class to complete it. For someone like me, a profession in programming is likely the
least to fit in. Knowing my limitations, it is a surprise to be favorably working in this field. But one thing is
for sure, I never cease in lifting up my skills and ability to my creator.
As it is written, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the
Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” - Colossians 3:23-24
True enough, I am here writing this article to honor and acknowledge my God.

At one point in your life, you found yourself passionate equipment serves as catalysts. Step by step you are
about something and decided to commit on being good moving forward closer to your goal. On most days, it’s
at it; may it be a new skill, a new work, or perhaps a new all good. You’ve learned the ways to balance learning,
hobby. And the most exciting part will always be the working, and doing other commitments at the same
start. You’ll start with setting your goal, then identifying time. It feels like no one can stop you from getting
all things necessary, and finally execution. You would be better until one-day adversity comes along. You don’t
giving ample amount of time learning everything about think this will happen do you? And what if this adversi-
it and, for some, spending money to buy new tools and ty doesn’t come from the outside, but rather inside?

“I will never be good in this...”, “Am I wasting my time here?”, “I’m too slow in learning this...” “I think I’m stuck…”

There are days in which you hear voices inside your head that criticizes the things you are doing. It will
really start to disrupt your balance once you start giving in, and everything you did from the start will be tum-

EDITORIAL

Now, we have to deal with these internal distractions. And here are some ideas for you:
 The Discomfort of Learning.
Learning is a tedious road. There will be moments of being not-good, cluelessness, and a feeling of almost quitting.
First off, do acknowledge the challenge. Know that it is okay to commit mistakes during the learning stage. Just be-
cause you’re trying to get better at something doesn’t mean your bad at it. Adapting from your mistakes and dis-
comforts will improve your character. No one started as an expert. Maybe someone is ahead of you but still, eve-
ryone started from the ground up.

 Slow and Steady.

The media always tries to portray the ideal personal and professional lives we should be having at this time of our
lives. Don’t be pressured, we are all living in our own unique timeline. Be realistic, no egg hatches in just a day;
there is no such thing as overnight success. Take small steps at a time then make bigger strides when able. All you
have to do is keep on moving forward. Trust the process but remember to work smart.

 Stay connected to your purpose.

In times of difficulty, when you feel low and depressed in what you’re doing, bring yourself back to why you’re
bettering yourself. You certainly have a good reason you’re doing this. Hopefully, by recalling your purpose, you
might be able to bring back the excitement and drive in order to reach your goals.

 Enjoy the Journey.

Pause for a moment and look back on the things you had
and the goals you’ve accomplished. Share your success
with people you love. Having able to enjoy in times of
hardships allows you set another perspective which you
can draw inspiration and motivation from. Remember to
reward yourself at times even in small victories. Be proud
of what you become through tough challenges.

In physics, there is almost always a resisting force whenever an object moves. This is called friction. And in life,
there will always be something that will hinder us in moving forward. Know that overcoming these challenges is
the vital part of the process of becoming a better you. Be persistent and never forget the reason you started
bettering yourself. Always have faith in your abilities and never forget to enjoy the journey. In the end, doing
what you truly want matters the most.

One morning I went out to buy drinks at a konbini a few meters away from my apartment.
It was my first weekend on a foreign land, miles away from home, with a vibe completely
new and overwhelming to me. As I entered the door which automatically slid open, a mid-
dle aged woman standing at the cash register exclaimed in a loud but polite tone
”Irasshaimase!”. I was startled a little but I somehow managed to understand what she
meant. I came in, looked for something to buy but I couldn’t read a thing. It was all in Japa-
nese. That’s when I truly realized I am not in the Philippines. Not anymore. Not for a year.

Konnichiwa. I am Alfie Gado from Civil Detail Engineering Section. It’s been eight months
since I came here in Japan and it has so far been a great and unforgettable experience.
Last November 2017, I, together with Ryan-san, were dispatched to work here in Fukuoka
as steel detailers for an on-going MHPS project which is IGCC Nakoso. Included in our
work responsibility is to coordinate with MTS Civil Section regarding the said project and
to also render assistance in other on-going projects. It’s the first time for MTS Civil to
send engineers here in Fukuoka to work under Fudo Giken Industry Co., Ltd., an affiliate
company of MHPS.

I also got the chance to go to Nagasaki and visit
other MTS Civil. I joined them to a trip to Shima-

great time enjoying those beautiful sceneries
and places. Mount Unzen was surreal. Shimaba-

Tokyo to explore nearby prefectures. I went to Hitachi Sea-

Shibazakura Garden near Kawaguchiko. The highlight of that
trip would be to personally witness Mount Fuji. I was amazed
just by looking at the majestic volcano and its beauty.

Last Golden Week holiday, I decided to take a

solo trip to Tokyo and it was one of the high-
lights of my stay here in Japan. It was my best
travel experience so far. I had a lot of expec-
tations going to Tokyo. Maybe because I’ve
always dreamed to go there and feel what it’s
like to experience its busy but interesting city
vibe. Tokyo has always been busy, holiday or
no holiday. And that’s what I’m after. And
yes, I was not disappointed. My stay there
was just fascinating, exciting and overwhelm-
ing. I finally checked one of the top places in
my bucket list. I stayed in a capsule hotel in
Tokyo. I wanted to experience sleeping in one
of those sleeping pods and it was quite an
unforgettable experience. The places I visited
were Shibuya Crossing, famous for its Scram-

of Japan’s most iconic landmarks; The Tokyo
