Temper Bead Weld Repair TBD / [Controlled Deposition Welding Technique - CDW]

TBD or CDW are used as an alternative to PWHT in repairing of weld joints when PWHT is
impractical. This technique is acceptable and endorsed by many codes either for repairing new
welds or for post construction repairs. # CDW covers the two techniques TBD and Half Bead
Welding Technique (which requires removal of half of first layer) [2] # Repairing new welds under
ASME VIII div.1 is permitted by TBD but limited to half bead weld repair and temper bead
reinforcement technique. where approximately half of this layer shall be removed by grinding
before depositing subsequent layers. [3] # TBD allowed by NBIC as alternative to PWHT [4] # TBD
is not mentioned in ASME piping codes B31.1 & B31.3. However, both codes refer to ASME Sec IX
for all welding requirements. So, TBD is acceptable by both codes as well. # ASME PCC2 raised a
constrain on using TBD for P22 and higher Cr materials in H2 service because of high weld-metal
and HAZ hardness generated by welding process.
