TASK PERFORMANCE
STMicroelectronics
STMicroelectronics is one of the world’s largest semiconductor companies around the globe. Offering
one of the industry’s broadest product portfolios, STMicroelectronics serves customers across the
spectrum of electronics applications with innovative semiconductor solutions by leveraging its vast array
of technologies, design expertise, and combination of intellectual property portfolio, strategic
partnerships, and manufacturing strength. The company focuses its product strategy on sense and
power technologies, automotive products, and embedded-processing solutions. The sense and power
segment encompasses sensors, power discrete, and advanced analog products. The automotive portfolio
covers all key application areas from powertrain and safety to car body and infotainment. The
embedded-processing solutions include microcontrollers, digital consumer and imaging products, and
application processors. The products of the company are found everywhere. Indeed, microelectronics
make a positive and innovative contribution to people’s lives.

The company’s world-class products and technologies serve to deliver compelling multimedia
experiences to consumers anytime, anywhere – in the home, in the car, and on the go. In addition, the
company also aims to increase energy efficiency along the energy chain, from power generation to
distribution and consumption. They provide all aspects of data security and protection by enabling
various types of applications that cater to their local and international market.

From its inception, STMicroelectronics established a strong culture of partnership and through the years
has created a worldwide network of strategic alliances with key customers, suppliers, competitors,
leading universities, and research institutes around the world. Despite its strong partnership with
different organizations, STMicroelectronics is not exempted from organizational problems that even
major companies experience in one way or another. Most of the employees complain about the
leadership style of the top management; all the employees can agree that the management is directive
and dictatorial. Leaders, particularly the supervisors, are not open to suggestions that will help improve
the operations of the business. They only provide orders and expect that the factory workers will comply
obediently to their commands. This issue has resulted to a major protest on the side of the workers. The
workers were able to establish a personal resistance to the change initiatives that are being imposed by
the management resulting to decline in production and overall efficiency towards product quality of the
company. In addition, the management has been blindsighted by the artificial growth of their
organization that they have failed to consider the feedback of their external and internal stakeholders.
As soon as the problem was brought to the attention of the management, the board of the company
organized a brainstorming activity among their members. The management decides to make the
employees involved in the decision- making since they are the ones who are directly exposed in the
different processes of the organization. The management also plans to establish a more conducive work
environment that promotes employee involvement and empowerment after soliciting insights for
improvement from their internal and external stakeholders.

Follow the suggested outline below in answering the case study:

I. Background

a. With the growing need of monitoring manufacturing processes in industrial companies, sharing and
using same manufacturing information such as control indicators among company engineers is necessary to
efficiently ensure this task. STMicroelectronics established a strong culture of partnership and through the
years has created a worldwide network of strategic alliances with key customers, suppliers, competitors,
leading universities, and research institutes around the world. The use of off the shelf distributed systems
has become common in many industries, because of their ability to provide a flexible management and
maintenance of the manufacturing data.

II. Statement of the Problem

a. Situational Leadership is the right style for the STMicroelectronics, because the leader will consider
several factors like his relationship with the employees and it adapts to the team's needs and sets a
beneficial balance for the whole organization.

b. The STMicroelectronics should do Survey, because it is used to obtain relevant feedback from
internal and external customers. It can be conducted internally in a form of employee feedback, to gain
information on problem areas concerning products and services.

c.  ISO 9000 lead to better quality products to STMicroelectronics’ organizational and higher
customer satisfaction, the attention to standards helps improve other company operations. With
regard to customer service, ISO 9000 requires clear goals, verifiable training and documented
procedures.

III. Areas of Consideration

a. STMicroelectronics entail the increase of the number of information resources because each
indicator in a specific format is a resource. As a consequence, to use a manufacturing indicator, an
engineer must spend a lot of time in searching in resource repositories, sometimes without effective
results, even by using a search engine. The main reason behind this difficulty is that these resources
usually lack of descriptive Meta data that give a sense to the resources. This meaningful description is
known as semantics.

IV. Alternative Courses of Action

a. Alternative 1: The STMicroelectronics organizational should control their manufacturing processes.

 Controlling manufacturing processes with a set of indicators enables industrial companies to

ensure a continuous control of their activities. The process control relies on a set of standard tools
and methods established in manufacturing companies to guarantee the use of reliable and
efficient indicators by company engineers.

b. Alternative 2: They should know the use of semantic retrieval process.

 Semantic retrieval process emphasizes the use of one or many business ontologies. Such
ontologies give a description of a domain as a whole, without differentiating between business
semantics and the linguistic aspect.

I. Recommendation

a. The STMicroelectronics organizational have problem with their leader and employees and I think
they are lack of unity. I recommend to them that they should have a brainstorming, because In this
method, all ideas are considered valid. After all ideas have been recorded, the participants will go through
the list one item at a time, weighing the relative merits of each. The process of selection will be repeated
until the group decides on the most effective idea that would help improve the current practices of the
organization.

II. Management Lessons Learned

a. They need to realize that not only should the leader do everything but the employees should also
realize that they should have unity and they should have Participative Leadership , because the leader
allows the team members to develop strategies and solutions to the problem of the organization, in that
way everyone will be able to talk and find out what the problem is.
