The Land of Confusion - Genesis

A - Honestly, I was creeped out by the realistic puppetry that Genesis decided to do for the video. The
song itself was really enjoyable and groovy with the 80s synthesizer vibes, but the video was just creepy
with the amount of weird things happening. I also really enjoyed the singing, it added a depth to the
music that highlighted the strengths of the music.

E - The music and singing itself made me really happy, I would listen to that song a lot because I like
that style playing in the background when I am driving. I would definitely listen to it more often in the
car rather than on my computer, as on my computer I would have to see the video and the video was
not the most pleasant thing to watch. A lot of the puppets and the activities in the video were just
really weird and awkward, which fits in with the message of the music, but still very… interesting to
watch.

I - The video and the decisions that they made for the plot. It reminds me of the first video we watched
(Say Something) and how that song was also great, yet the video was just really weird to watch. Once
again, I understand why they went with what they did, it fits in perfectly with the insanity and
confusion that they speak of and reference in the lyrics, but it is still really awkward to watch. The text
talked a lot about that the world we live in is full of confusion and we just have to deal with it, because
that’s the way that the world will stay. It’s a good message and portrayed fantastically, but in a creepy,
puppet-y way.

O - My initial thoughts consisted of two things: First, I thought that the singer/style of the music
immediately made me think that the song was like Phil Collins and many of his pieces (You’ll be in My
Heart, Against All Odds) until I looked it up and it was Phil Collins. The second thing I thought
about was that the video reminded me of any realistic puppetry, like Yoda from Star Wars or T he
Dark Crystal. I did not enjoy the combination of human costume with the puppet mask, it creeped
me out a fair amount, but I enjoyed the song a lot.

U - What caused them to write this song? The message of this song was that the world is full of
confusion that we can’t control, yet we thrive anyway, which leads to believe that the members or a
member experienced or saw something so unordinary that it inspired them to make this message. If
something like that didn’t happen, then they still created an extraordinary song, but the way the lyrics
are phrased makes me believe that it was a response to something or some event.
