Essential Question
How did the Renaissance help bring about a “rebirth” of culture and learning?
Like other great changes in history, the Renaissance did not replace the Middle (Dark) Ages overnight. Nor did the changes take place at the same time everywhere in
Europe. The Renaissance began in the bustling cities of northern Italy around 1300. They were creating new styles of art, writing, and thought that would later spread
northward to the rest of Europe. Northern Europe’s feudal villages seemed to be in a different world from the “rebirth” of knowledge and art in Northern Italy, but
both existed at the same time. Northern Italy was a merchant’s region. Merchants dominated politics and society as well as business. Unlike feudal nobles, merchants
took pride in their achievements. Just as these merchants competed with one another in business, they also competed as patrons, or sponsors, of the arts. Throughout
northern Italy, wealthy families spent their money lavishly for the glory of helping artists create works of genius. Such was the setting for the Renaissance.
