V.i.1-84. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s castle/ Scotland
1. Explain the significance in Lady Macbeth’s command to have light by her at all times.
Lady Macbeth does not want to be reminded of all the horrible events that has happened in the night time. To avoid
the darkness Lady Macbeth keeps light with her all the time to avoid these memories coming back

2. List the three crimes Lady Macbeth confesses to in her sleepwalking/talking, and the reaction of the
Gentlewoman and Doctor.
Lady McBeth confesses to the killings of Duncan Banquo and MacDuffs family. According to the doctor lady
Macbeth sleepwalking has no cure and she will need spiritual healing. The gentle woman implies that her madness is
due to all the things she has done and now all the guilt she is feeling.

3. Explain the magnitude, and shift in Lady Macbeth’s guilt when she states: “Here’s the smell of the blood still. All
/ the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little / hand. O, O, O!” ~ Who is she mirroring?
When Lady Macbeth says “Here’s the smell of the blood still. All / the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little /
hand. O, O, O!” She is mirroring hat Macbeth had said the night they murdered Duncan. This night Macbeth said
that the oceans water would never clean there hands from the blood. Lady Macbeth has to deal with what she has
don’t because it is not leaving her and she can’t make it go away or fix it.

4. The Doctor states: “Foul whisp’rings are abroad. Unnatural deeds / Do breed unnatural troubles.” With this in
mind, answer the LI.
The doctor implies that Lady Macbeth will need God to cure her because no medicine can. Since Lady Macbeth did
something unnatural… supernatural things will happen to her.
