 Control unit

A simple sentence.

 Subject

The subject contains the word or group of words that does something or is something.

 Predicate

The predicate contains the word or group of words that is used to express action (hit, run)
or state or being (is, will, be, am).

 Support unit

A group of words supporting the meaning of the control unit by adding more meanings to
it.

 Transition marker

Phrases added to sentences that connect them to other sentences within a paragraph or
between paragraphs.

 Conjunction

Words used to join two parts of a sentence (e.g. and, but, for, since, so, yet).

 Verb

A 'doing' word which refers to an action, a process, an event, or a state.

 Noun

A 'naming word' referring to people and things as well as to abstract ideas and
phenomena.

 Pronoun

A word that takes the place of a noun (e.g. she, it, who).

 Adjective

A 'describing word' that adds information about a noun or pronoun.

 Adverb

A word that quantifies a verb or adjective (e.g. easily, bravely, very, happily).

 Preposition
A word used before a noun or pronoun to relate it to the other words (e.g. for, by, to, in,
at, with, under, over, from, before).

 Article

A type of determiner (a, an, the) that precedes a noun.

 Simple sentence

Control unit = subject + predicate

 Complex sentence

Control unit + support unit
