Guide Questions:

1. How did these inventions and discoveries impact the society?


 The first artificial reef was invented by Angel Alcala during 1972 this reef became a
model for many other fisheries development programs around the world. This artificial
reef is protecting and preserving 25% of the total fish habitat would enable the fish
population to sustain itself over the long term. In other words, by protecting 25% of the
habitat the remaining 75% would provide an abundant fish supply and this known as the
spillover effect.

2. How were these inventions and discoveries and discoveries supported by the
government?
 The government supported the invention of Alcala’s through the Malacanang
Proclamation No. 786 on June 6, 2014 by former president Aquino conferred on
academician Angel Alcala the rank and title of national scientist in recognition of his
outstanding contributions to society, specifically his seminar and original research on the
systematic, ecology and diversity of Philippine amphibians, reptiles and marine
biodiversity reef fishes and conservation (marine-protected areas)

3. Did these inventions and discoveries serve the public good? Explain your
answer.
 Yes, because through this artificial reef it increase the survival of marine organism, they
improve the marine life in a certain area also it provide a substrate for settlement of fish
and growth of algae and other marine organisms that will provide food sources.
