EXERCISE 3.

ISSUES IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (GROUP WORK)

Instructions: Form groups with 2-3 members. Review the 10 immerging ethical and
policy issue dilemmas compiled by the John J. Reilly Center for Science, Technology,
and Values of the University of Notre Dame for 2018. The teacher will assign each
group one immerging ethical dilemma in science and technology. Research about the
nature of the dilemma assigned to your group and be prepared to report the highlight
of your research in class. Use the guide questions below in preparing your output.
Create a PowerPoint presentation (no more than five slides) to highlight the summary
of your research:

1. What is the immerging ethical dilemma all about?

- Google Clips – a hands-free camera that lets the user capture the moment effortlessly
The immerging ethical dilemma posed by the various scientific discoveries that have
been made in the past couple of decades is about how we will use them in the future.

2. What factors or events led to this dilemma?

- One factor that led us to this dilemma is its uses. People nowadays also want a very
innovative technology, and they want it because they think it will make their life much
easier.
3. What are the societal implications of this dilemma?
- Just as what I stated in question number 2, it will make the lives of people easier since
most people nowadays love taking picture. With “Google clips” they can already take a
photo without literally hold a cellphone.
4. Why is it important to question the moral and ethical issues surrounding innovations
in science and technology?
- We tend to believe that technological advancement makes us more aware of the things
that are not visible to others. However, there are also sides to everything. We may not
know what the app is really doing, maybe it’s spying us when we are asleep.
5. In the face of this dilemma, why is it important to study STS?
- Because it will show us the different problems in the science and technology. Which
will be very important for us to learn and understand.
