Content Topics: Content topics were appropriate for this course for the academic year 2019-

1. Reading Comprehension- Teachers used appropriate teaching techniques and
strategies to deliver content for reading comprehension. Students were able to
become effective readers before, during, and after reading. Teachers planned,
monitored, and evaluated students reading comprehension.
2. Vocabulary- Reading comprehension builds students writing and speaking skills
hence the significance of vocabulary in the course outline. Topics such as context
clues, synonyms, antonyms, related words, prefixes, suffixes, etc. were adequate
in building student’s writing through vocabulary and growth of eloquence in
speaking.

writers of the Standard English language.
(i) Parts of Speech: Teachers taught the seven parts of speech for students to
have the knowledge and proper use of it.

way for students to develop their English language lexicon and syntax.

Units Description for the academic year 2019- 2020

First Semester: September – December 2019
Unit ONE: Adolescent- It’s All About Me
Under this unit, students were able to learn more about themselves. They gained
knowledge of the transitional period they have to endure during their adolescent years.
This unit was helpful not only because students learned about themselves and issues
surrounding their teenage years, but also because vocabulary, reading comprehension,
grammar and mechanics, and research were all incorporated.
Unit TWO: Girls and Guys/ Summary Writing
Unit 2 was important for students to open up on their sexual identity as stated on the
course outline. Students were able to learn not only of their sexual identity but also
summary writing. They were able to build their vocabulary, use proper grammar and
mechanics, and develop their summary writing skills.
Unit THREE & SEVEN: Research Paper-English SBA
The research paper was important for students to prepare for CXC in their 4th year.
Students were able to collaborate as a group to create their portfolio. Since the SBA was
also part of unit seven for the second semester, students spent most of the second
semester working on their research paper. Due to COVID-19, most topics in the second
semester were not cover.
Unit FOUR: Essay Writing
Students were able to acquire knowledge of the five-paragraph essay format. Teachers
used different techniques and strategies like the “hamburger technique,” among others.
This facilitated students to learn the format for essay writing.
Recommendation: Teachers recommend to add composition writing under essay writing.
Including types of composition will allow students to differentiate between the types of
composition writing and not only focus on persuasive writing.

 Topics/Units not covered for Second Semester: January - June 2020

Unit FIVE: Got It Get It (Advertisement)
Unit SIX: Say It Out Loud (Persuasive Speech)

Recommendation: Teachers recommend that these units be placed on the 4th form syllabus this
year for students as revision.
 Evaluation (s): The evaluation measures proved to be efficient and reliable when it came
to obtaining results.
