SECOND GRADE E-LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Week 3

MATH
● Shapes: Go on a Shape Hunt around your home. Look for items shaped like a square, rectangle, and a
triangle. Draw and label the items.
● Oral Counting: Practice skip counting to 1,000 by 5s, 10s, and 100s
● Measurement: How many pennies long is your hand? How many nickels? How many dimes? How
many quarters? Can you figure out how much each coin amount is worth?
● How many are hiding?: Take up to 20 objects. Put some in each hand. Show 1 hand and have an
adult figure out how many are hiding. Switch.
● Number of the Day: Make 18 three ways, by: (1) Adding two numbers; (2) Subtracting two numbers;
and (3) Adding three numbers

LITERACY
● Fluency: Practice your fluency by reading the article “Two American Bears” out loud to someone in
your house.
● Reading: Read the article, “Two American Bears.” Answer the questions in the “Reading” section of
your activity packet.
○ Main idea: find the main idea of the article, and three details that support the main idea.
● Reading: Read the article “Two American Bears.” Answer the questions in the “Reading” section of
your activity packet.
○ Answer Questions: answer the questions about brown bears and black bears.
● Reading: Read the article “Two American Bears.” Answer the questions in the “Reading” section of
your activity packet.
○ Author’s Purpose: describe the author’s purpose for writing the article.
● Reading: Read the article “Two American Bears.” Answer the questions in the “Reading” section of
your activity packet.
○ Ask Questions: what questions do you still have about bears?

SCIENCE/PLTW
● Engineering Challenge: Design a Hat: Compare materials (paper plate, aluminum foil, paper towel,
paper lunch bag). Determine which materials are soft enough to put on your head. Determine which
materials will soak up water (sweat on your head). Determine which materials are stiff enough to use
as a brim. Draw or build a hat using only these materials. Choose two of the following and compare.
Hat #1-to wear in the summer, Hat #2-to wear on a windy day, Hat #3-to wear while you are playing
soccer, Hat #4-to wear on a rainy day.
● Investigation: How does heat change materials?: Get two different pieces of candy (or other food
item). Draw a picture of each one. Put each candy in hot water. Did it lose its shape? Squish each

candy between your fingers. Does it change shape? Is each candy solid, partially melted (soft and
squishy), or melted into a liquid?
● Engineering Challenge: Inventions: What could you create using these three new materials:
Kind-Sticky-Glue (glue that sticks but comes off easily), Electrochromic Glass (glass that changes from
see through to not see through), Super Conductor (material that floats near a magnet). Describe and
draw pictures of your inventions.
● Observation: Find a spot inside or outside that you can sit for 5 minutes. Mark an area that you will
observe with a circle (ex. a hula hoop, yarn tied in a circle, or socks laid out in a circle). Observe that
area for 5 minutes without talking to anyone. Draw or write what you observe. Be sure to use your
eyes, ears, noses, and sense of touch.
● Use Math and Computational Thinking: Fill a container to the top with the same item (don’t count it).
Estimate how many items are inside. Repeat this process with the same container but a different item.
Write a written statement that justifies your estimate.
● Investigation: Plastics: Go about your normal day (do and use everything you would use). Write
down every time you use something made of plastic. Record both the object and the number of times
you use it (a tally system is useful). Brainstorm ways to decrease your use of plastics (particularly
single use plastics). Choose and implement at least one action step you will take to reduce your
plastics use.

SOCIAL STUDIES
● Civic Virtue: Talk with an adult about what makes someone a role model. Think of an example.
● Civic Action: Imagine something that would make your neighborhood a better place to live. Describe
how it would make life better.
● Civic Virtue: Make up a story about a person who ignores their responsibilities (doesn’t do what they
are supposed to). Describe how that affects people around them.
● Civics: With an adult, find out who is the leader of your community?
● Civics: Find out how this person (above question) helps your community.

SEL
● With an adult, create a goal on how you will finish the school year regarding your grades.
● With an adult, establish a place in your home which can be your place to calm down when you have
intense emotions.
● With an adult, discuss cultural traditions they had growing up.
● Give at least 5 compliments to people you interact with during the week.
● Create a role play that includes someone having a problem and how they solve the problem.

Specials: For each day we are out of school, please choose one of the specials listed below and complete one
of the assignments listed.

ART
● Using any materials you would like, choose one of the items below and complete the
assignment in your sketchbook. If you do not have your sketchbook, feel free to complete the
assignment on whatever paper you have available. Be sure to think about the concepts you
have learned in class and try to incorporate and identify them in your picture.

○ Line Variety, Tactile Texture, Warm, Cool and Neutral Colors, Light, Medium, and Dark
Values, Symmetry, Patterns made with lines, Foreground, Middle ground, and
Background.

Sketchbook Ideas to Choose From:


● Pretend you are an ant. Draw what you would see if you were an ant.
● Create a picture of what the worst thing about being a kid is? OR Create a picture of
what the best thing about being a kid is?
● Create a picture of where you would go if you were invisible. Write 2 or 3 sentences to
describe why you would go to this place.
● If 2 of your family members or friends turned into animals, what animals would they be?
Write 2 or 3 sentences to describe each animal and create a picture of these 2 animals.
● What is something you are good at? Create a picture of you doing what you are good
at.

P.E.
● Do 20 jumping jacks, 10 sit ups and 10 push ups
● Stand on one foot and count to 30, stand on the other foot and count to 30
● Listen to your favorite song and play freeze dance:ask a family member to play the song and pause the
song at random times in the song. Remember you have to freeze when the music stops playing.
● Jump with two feet together 10 times, jump on your right foot 10 times and jump on your left foot 10
times
● Ask a family member to play catch with you: practice pointing and throwing, two hands in front to catch

MUSIC
● Musical Math - Follow the directions on the Musical Math worksheets. Remember the following note
values:
○ Whole Note & Whole Rest = 4
○ Half Note & Half Rest = 2
○ Quarter Note & Quarter Rest = 1
○ Two Eighth Notes = 1
