Understanding The Self Act. 1
Understanding The Self Act. 1
Baytan
Parenting is a tough road, it’s worth it to watch our little girl grow into amazing person. Even if I
feel like I’m struggling through this parenting journey, I am pretty sure that I’m strong enough to face
life’s challenges.
Being a mom requires a bravery that you probably didn’t know you had. Just making it through
birth takes bravery. But even after birth I need to be brave as I kiss my kid’s boo-boos. Brave as I raise
her to be a woman, I always knew she would be.
I as a soft-hearted person I always choose to forgive despite of being taken advantage of. It is an
attribute seen as a weakness and although it may seem absurd, soft-hearted people will still choose to
do it. Not because they were not hurt, but because they believe that forgiveness is not something you
do for others, but it is something you do for yourself.
Activity 1
Do You Know Yourself
1. How would you characterize yourself?
The first characteristic that comes in my mind that I have is being multitasker. I can deal
with more than one task at the same time. I managed my time efficiently and
multitasked. Just like now I can do parenting while studying. Some says it was really
hard. Yes, it is. But if you love and you have passion on what you are doing everything
will be easy.
2. What makes you stand out from, the rest? What makes yourself special?
I am different from other selves for I stand above my own experience for I am strong
and dependable. My experiences in life makes me who I am for today, and those
experiences differs from what the others have. I am continuously polishing the gems
that I have been. Through hard work and pressure, I am form to be a shinning diamond
upon the crowd.
3. How has yourself transformed itself?
In just one snap my old self turned into a new version of me “Alysa Pro Max” since when
I gave birth to my precious daughter Jae. She decorated and changed my whole life and
made it even better.
4. How is yourself connected to your body?
The self or the consciousness drives the body, the body is like a vessel where
consciousness or soul resides.
5. How is yourself related to other selves?
For me, the growth and development of every human being involves interaction with
other selves or the society.
6. What will happen to yourself after you dies?
Honestly, I do not know. Some says we are born to die and many of us wonder what
happens after death. Based on the internet when we die our spirit and body separate.
Even though our body dies, our spirit which is who we are lives on.
Were you able to answer the questions above with ease? Why? Which questions did you find
easiest to answer? Which one are difficult? Why?
When I read those questions, it brings a big question mark in my mind. I suddenly
thought how deeply o know myself or do I really know myself. For me the most difficult
question is the last one (What will happen to yourself after you dies?) because we do
not really know what will happen next. No one can tell me what will happen after I die,
except from the fact that our body will decompose but to our inner self? I do not know.
Activity 2
Comprehensively Explain the following:
A.
B.
1. Socrates – according to him, all of people needs to know our own selves. He also stated that
every man is compose of two separate part which is the body and the soul.
2. Plato – according to Plato, that every man has a perfect self, but he tends to forgot most of what
he had. By doing something good or contemplation he regains knowledge and perfection.
3. Augustine – same with the first two philosophers Augustine also believes that the self is
composed of body and soul, but he infused it with ideals of Christianity.
4. Descartes – he believes that self is composed of the body and the mind, he claims that there is
so much we need to doubt. The only thing we cannot doubt is the very existence of ourself.
5. Hume – for Hume the central idea of his philosophy is “to see is to believe”. David Hume
considers the self only as a bundle of experiences.
6. Kant – for Immanuel Kant man is the only creature who governs and directs himself and his
action.
7. Ryle – for Ryle what truly matters is behavior that person in his day to day life comprises the
self.
8. Merleau-Ponty – for him he considered the body and the mind as the two components of
ourself. For him the body and the mind are intertwined and that they cannot be separated from
one another.
The Self for me- My ideas about self is just like most of the philosophers, as Christian Catholic I believe
that the self is composed of the body and the soul. The body is a vessel driven by the soul or
consciousness. Also, the body and the soul can never be intertwined until death.
