Analysis
1. Do you agree with the differentiation between western and eastern?
 Yes, I am agreeing. Based on my observation and a little bit of knowledge
about these two, I can say that they differ in some aspects.

2. Where can you find the Philippines in the distinction?

 Philippines belongs to East.

3. Where you can find the Philippines similar of different from its Asian
neighbors?
 As we know, the Philippines has many of the same features that the rest of its
south Asian neighbors have. In terms of landmarks such as terraces,
limestone islands, coral reefs, beaches, and etc., these are very regular to
southeast Asian countries. When it comes to culture, the Philippines also
have a lot in common with its neighbors like collectivism, which was dominant
in all Asian countries. One of the traits of collectivistic culture is families and
communities have a central role, and this is where the politeness of Asians
comes into play. In Thailand they have the “wai”, in Japan and Korea they
“bow”, above all here in our country we have the “mano”. These simple
gestures showing or giving a sign of respect for some aspects. As for the
difference of the Philippines from its Asian neighbors, aside from having worst
government, other Asian countries only have ancient southeast Asian
cultures, unlike the Philippines which has a unique cultural mix of Spanish,
American, and Filipino. Secondly, most Filipino understand and speak at least
some English while some other countries in Asia cannot like china.

4. Is there also difference between regions or ethnolinguistic groups in the

Philippines?
 Yes, there is a difference between regions or ethnolinguistic groups such as
the dialects spoken, famous folklore, well-known local products, festivals, etc.
According to quora.com, there are seventeen administrative regions in the
Republic of the Philippines which divide 175 “distinct” ethnic groups and an
equal number of “distinct” languages spoken in the Philippines. different
regions different local traits and cultures. The Philippines is a very “diverse”
nation with many regional divides.

Application and assessment:

Knowing yourself is a process and a very confusing topic. But as time passes, we
slowly recognize what we read and who we are based on our observation. As a Filipino,
I have adopted so many things from my culture. Philippine culture composed by a blend
of traditional Filipino, and Spanish Catholic traditions, with influences from America and
other parts of Asia.
According to the South Pacific Journal of Psychology the Filipino concept of self
reflects a collectivistic perspective, as Filipinos tend to emphasize values and traits that
promote interpersonal cooperation, reciprocity, and social acceptance, rather than
individualistic values such as autonomy and uniqueness. Filipinos are dependent for we
cannot stand by our own feet; we always depend on others especially on our family.
They also get difficulty in separating from their parents even they have their own family
because Filipinos are family-oriented wherein they used to be with their relatives instead
of separating. Culture influences us whether and how we value traits like humility, self-
esteem, politeness, and assertiveness. It also influences how you perceive hardship
and how you feel about relying on others.
How we see ourselves shapes our lives, and is shaped by our cultural context.
Self-perceptions influence, among other things, how we think about the world, our social
relationships, health and lifestyle choices, community engagement, political actions, and
ultimately our own and other people's well-being. (apa.org.)
