SIMPLIFIED LEARNING CONTINUITY PLAN

UNDERSTANDING THE SELF
PRELIMS
TOPIC
LESSON 1. DEFINING the Self: Personal and Development perspective on Self and Identity

Activity 1:
Name: Clarissa Joy R. Agao Date: September 14, 2022
Course & Year: BEED 1st Year College Time:

Answer the following questions about yourself as fully and precisely as you can.

1. How would you characterize yourself?

 At an early age I have been through some struggles and difficulties in life. I have seen
how hard life can be, how terrible a person can be, and how greed can affect a person’s
behavior. No matter how bad a person treats me I always choose to forgive, it is very
important to know that we are not all the same, that means I might be having a good day
and some people might be having the opposite. With all of the challenges that I have
encountered, I can say that I am a strong and understanding person. I accept anyone’s
opinion about me because I know for myself that I am still learning and that I need more
improvements.

2. What makes you stand out from the rest? What makes yourself special?
 I think what makes me stand out from the rest is that I talk less, but do more. I actually
prefer to be silent and just listen or let other people do the talking. Because I believe that
actions speaks louder than words. What makes myself special is that me, for being who I
am and that’s enough to make myself special because there is no other me in this world.
3. How has yourself transformed itself?
 Myself transformed itself through my past experiences, this helps me to build the person
that I am today.

4. How is yourself connected to your body?

 I act based on what my mind think therefore my body will do the physical work. I cannot
create things without my mind and I cannot do things without my body. That is how
myself and body is connected.

5. How is yourself related to other selves?

 Myself is related to other selves by having or sharing the same likes and dislikes, same
beliefs and culture and many more. These will serve as a bond or connection that will be
strong enough to break.

6. What will happen to yourself after you die?

 After I die, my body will perish but my soul will not. If I leave this world without
accomplishing my goal, I maybe a wandering soul, if that’s possible. But if after I die
then I have no regrets in life, I will be able to depart in this world peacefully.

APPLICATION and SELF ASSESSMENT

1. Socrates
 An external life is necessary for us to know our purpose and value. He believes that
reality is divided into two dichotomous rounds, the physical realm and ideal realm. He
also said that the self is the essence of the soul.

2. Plato
 Just like Socrates, Plato also believes that reality is divided into two dichotomous rounds.
He introduces the concept of tripartite self, the reason, physical appetite and
spirit/passion. Reasons means for Plato is the divine essence, it helps us understand
eternal truth. An example of physical appetite is hunger while an example of
spirit/passion is the emotions.

3. Agustine
 Infused Christianity to knowledge of the Greeks. He said that the body is the spouse of
the soul because we are created with the image of God. St. Agustine said that knowing
God is equal to knowing ourselves.

4. Descartes
 Self is Cogito Ergo Sum, meaning I think before I am. Descartes said that no one ever
doubt his existence because of our ability to think. He also said that self is a thinking
entity and as physical body. He believes in the body mind dualism.

5. Hume
 There is no self. He acknowledge that all of the sense experiences are just an impressions
and ideas. We can’t sense ourselves because they are just impressions and ideas. As what
Hume said.

6. Kant
 Disagree with Hume, there is self because the mind organizes our experiences. He said
that self is a product of reason. The mind is the organizing principle. The mind constructs
reality.

7. Ryle
 To eliminate the body mind dualism. He also said that self is same as bodily behavior.
according to him, the way we act, is the same on how we see ourselves.

8. Merleau-Ponty
 Self is embodied subjectivity. The mind and the body are intertwined. Both the mind and
the body are part of creating who you are.

Lesson 2
TOPIC: The Self, Society and Culture
Activity 1. Essay

Name: Clarissa Joy R. Agao Date: September 14, 2022

Course & Year: BEED I 1st year College Time:

1. Describe yourself, your environment and your relationship to your community.

I would describe myself as a loving, understanding, helpful and kind person. I am a very
passionate person. I always make sure to do things on time. I love to sing and dance, it makes me
feel happy whenever I am doing these things. I also write poems during my spare time. But
there’s one thing about me, I am a shy person, I don’t have enough courage to do things in front
of many people. I prefer to just stay quiet and just speak/talk when I really need to.
My environment is the best for me. I am surrounded with the very friendly and
supportive family, friends and neighborhoods. I live in a small but very nice place here in
Pastrana, Leyte. Our house is located near the police station so we all feel safe. I live with my
parents, my three sisters and one brother. My family is the real essence of my life. I owe
everything to my family specially my parents, and my siblings. They’re the ones who stood by
me through thick and thin. They always show their love and support towards me, I learned the
value of honesty, time, hard work, commitment, sincerity and many more from them.
I started in this community much younger than the most, and from it I have learned a lot
of things that molds me as to what kind of person I am now. I am a good follower in my
community. I always follow the rules and regulations here, the do’s and don’ts as well. I am an
active youth in our church and I also help promote the cleanliness in our barangay. I can say that
I have a great bond with our community as I’m always looking forward in the beauty in it.
Giving or sharing love and support to anyone in need and being a good role model not only to
the kids but to everyone in our community.
2. What are the influences that the society and culture have contributed to your
development as an individual?
Culture and society are intricately related. A culture consists of the “objects” of a
society, whereas a society consists of the people who share a common culture. When the terms
culture and society first acquired their current meanings, most people in the world worked and
lived in small groups in the same locale.
Culture consists of the beliefs, behaviors, objects and other characteristics common to the
members of a particular group or society. Through culture, people and groups define themselves,
conform to society’s shared values and contribute to society. Thus, culture includes many
societal aspects: language, customs, values, norms, mores, rules, tools, technologies, products,
organizations, and institutions. This latter term institution refers to cluster of rules and cultural
meanings associated with specific social activities.
With improved learning and health, increased tolerance, and opportunities to come
together with others, culture enhances our quality of life and increases overall well-being for
both individuals and communities. Culture also provides important social and economic benefits,
influences our personality and how it is displayed, such as if and how you value traits like
humility, self-esteem, politeness and assertiveness. It also influences how we perceive hardship
and how we feel about relying on others.
