SCOPE OF INSPECTION

 To carry out thickness measurements on floor plates with a minimum of five (5) readings per
plate.

 To carry out thickness measurements on roof plates with a minimum of five (5) readings per
plate.

 To carry out side wall inspection utilizing an Ultrasonic Crawler at eight (8) or sixteen (16) or
twenty-four (24) compass points with a minimum of five (5) readings per strake.

 To carry out corrosion scanning on the bottom 300 mm of the bottom strake with minimum of
3 vertical runs per plate.

 To carry out a tank shell settlement survey and calculate planar tilt and differential settlement.

 To carry out a Magnetic flux leakage floormap inspection supported by an ultrasonic

continuous corrosion scan of the floor plates.

 To carry out a continuous corrosion scan of the 100 mm band around the periphery of the tank
and areas where access to the floormap is restricted.

 To carry out an internal floor plate settlement survey and calculate maximum and minimum
settlement values.

 To carry out plumb bob readings and calculate maximum values of planar tilt.

 To carry out an internal tank edge settlement survey and calculate API and EEMUA limits.

 To carry out a general visual inspection and record any condition which may be detrimental to
the tank's serviceability.

 To compile a full report showing readings and locations of such readings. Review against API
653 and EEMUA 159, Engineering Integrity Assessment and comments shall also be included.

 Produce CAD Drawing of roof, shell and floor plate layout, identifying all existing fittings,
appurtenances and obvious tank modifications / repairs.

API STANDARD 653, THIRD EDITION, ADDM 1, SEPTEMBER 2003
4.3.3 Minimum Thickness calculation for Welded Tank Shell

4.3.3.1 The minimum acceptable shell plate thickness for continued service shall be determined by one or more of the methods
noted here in. These methods are limited to tanks with diameters equal to or less than 200 ft or less :
a. When determining the minimum acceptable thickness for an entire shell course, t min is calculated as follows:
tmin = 2.6 (H – 1) DG
SE
b. When determining the minimum acceptable thickness for any other portions of a shell course (such as a locally thinned
area or any other location of interest), tmin is calculated as follows:
tmin = 2.6 (HDG)
SE
Where :

tmin = The minimum acceptable thickness, in in. for each course as calculated from the above formula; however, t min
shall not be less than 0.1 in. for any tank course,
D = Nominal diameter of tank, in ft.,
H = height from the bottom of the shell course under consideration to the maximum liquid level when evaluating an
entire shell course, in ft; or
= height from the bottom of the length L (see 4.3.2.1) from the lowest point of the bottom of L of the locally
thinned area to the maximum liquid level, in ft; or
= height from the lowest point within any location of interest to the maximum liquid level, in ft,
G = Highest specific gravity of the contents,
S = Maximum allowable stress in lbf/in.2; use the smaller of 0.80Y or 0.429T for bottom and second course; use the
smaller of 0.88Y or 0.472T for all other courses. Allowable shell stresses are shown Table 4-1 for materials
listed in the current and previous editions of API Std 12C and Std 650. Note: For reconstructed tanks, S shall
be in accordance with the current applicable standard.
Y = Specified minimum yield strength of the plate; use 30,000 lbf/in. 2 if not known.
T = The smaller of the specified minimum tensile strength of the plate or 80,000 lbf/in. 2 ; use 55,000 lbf/in.2 if not
known.

GUIDELINES FOR THE INTERPRETATION OF THE MFL FLOORMAP DATA SHEETS

1. FLOOR PLATE NUMBERING SCHEME

 The floormap system supports the use of row/column plate numbering system. These are usually numbered from the top left of the tank
sequentially.

2. TANK DATUM

 The Tank datum point is a chosen coordinate for all references of position that are made when defining plates during an inspection. This
datum point refers to the bottom left corner of the tank, as illustrated on the tank floor layout sheet enclosed.
 Vertical and Horizontal Plates
Vertical plates are plates that are orientated in the vertical plane.
Horizontal plates are plates that are orientated in the horizontal plane.

Note: If a plate is square, then it can be defined as being either vertical or horizontal.

3. FLOOR PLATE COLOUR CODING

 Pertaining to the complete overview of the floor plates, individual plates are colour coded in relation to the thickness loss encountered.
Four colour bands are usually adopted and relate directly to set threshold values. These graduated threshold values denoting the total
material loss in percentage terms.

4. INDIVIDUAL PLATE MAP INTERPRETATION AND COLOUR CODING

 Individual plates are presented for viewing and analysis at a 15 mm resolution. The plate is graduated along its length and across its width
in 15 mm divisions.
 Each 15 x 15 mm resolved area is also colour coded in relation to the minimum remaining thickness encountered. Again four (4) colour
bands are adopted and relate directly to set threshold values. These values denoting total material loss in percentage terms.
 Orientation of the plate has a direct relationship to the tank datum, which is located in the left hand bottom corner.
 The x, y coordinate reference is taken from the left hand top corner of each plate map profile and relates directly to the tank floor plate.

5. LIMITATIONS ON THE INTERPRETATION OF FLOORMAP RESULTS.

 Pipework: Any pipework which is too close to the floor to allow access of the Floormap unit will be subject to B-scan ultrasonic inspection
to supplement the Floormap inspection.
 Lapped Welds: At welds between adjacent plates the Floormap is able to scan the edge of the weld on the upper plate, but is not able to scan
closer than 30mm to the weld on the lower plate. If inspection results indicate the plate to be of suspect condition then B-scan ultrasonic
inspection is used to supplement the Floormap inspection along this narrow band.
 Shell-to-Floor Fillet Weld : The floormap is unable to scan closer than 100 mm to shell/floor fillet weld due to curvature of shell. This area is
inspected via ultrasonic B-scan around the full circumference.
 Plate Configuration: The Floormap is unable to examine annular or sketch plates adjacent to the tank shell, if the width of the plate has
reduced to less than approximately 400mm. This is because the Floormap unit becomes wedged against the tank shell. B-scan ultrasonic
inspection is used to examine this critical region.
 Note : Ultrasonic B-scan inspection of restrictive areas is only possible on tank floors which do not contain a GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic)
lining. When a GRP lining is present no ultrasonic B-scan back-up is possible due to thickness, composition and bonding to the steel plate.
Epoxy coated and uncoated floors are acceptable.
 Previous Remedial Work: Any previous welding on the plate gives rise to spurious indications, as the Floormap interprets the change in flux
density at such areas as defects. The indications are generally in the range 80% of floor thickness and ultrasonic inspection is used to
confirm results at these positions.
 On dirty or oily floor surfaces, the wheel on the positional encoder may slip and cause small errors in the coordinates locating areas of
corrosion pitting.
