11:05-11:15 Math Mini-Lesson: Introducing Fact Families
Have you noticed the relationship between addition and subtraction? If I
were to give you the numbers 2, 3, and 5, what addition and subtraction
statements could you make with it? These are what we call fact
families. Fact families are important to know because they help us
recognize the answers to questions faster! For example, if I know that
2
6+1=7, I should be able to easily remember that 7-6=1 because 1 is the
other number in that fact family! There are a few different ways to
show fact families.
11:15-11:45 Math Independent Work Time
Students will complete pages 1 and 2 in their math booklet. With remaining
time, students are encouraged to practice math facts or play math
games on the class website or Prodigy.
11:45-11:55 Math Mini-Lesson: Word Problems
Word problems are always one of the things that students struggle with
the most! There are a few word problem tricks that we can use to help
us solve these tricky problems! Primarily, our tricks come with reading
the problem multiple times and each time we look for something
different. The first time we read through, we ask ourselves if the
question is addition or subtraction. When we do this, there are some
words we can look for. If we see “altogether,” “total,” or “in all,” that
usually means we need to add! If we see “fewer,” “difference,” or “less”
that tells us to subtract! The second time we read through, we can fill in
the addition or subtraction sentence. Then, we can solve!
11:55-12:25 Math Independent Work Time
Students will complete page 3 in their math booklet. With remaining time,
students are encouraged to practice math facts or play math games

want to use an event that has happened to them if they are stuck for
ideas.
