1:20-1:40 Science: Beginning Our New Unit!
We are beginning our new unit today: Exploring Liquids!
We will begin by brainstorming what we already know about liquids, including their properties and
examples of different liquids.
Scientists need to look at liquids a bit differently, so it’s time to put on our scientist hat and look at
liquids the way a scientist would look at liquids! Scientists look for the properties of liquids.
Properties of liquids might include: colour, texture, scent, flow rate, transparency, among others
that we will discuss as we get into our unit!
I will introduce the “Properties of Household Liquids” page.
1:40-2:10 Science Experiment
Students will complete the Properties of Household Liquids page by testing 4-5 different household
liquids.
1
2:10-2:25 Science Demonstration: Measuring Volume
Miss Bourassa will demonstrate the basics of volume! We will make predictions about which
container we think will hold the most water. We will also see how liquids are measured, and then
do some testing!
3:30-4:30 Homework ‘Hour’ with Miss Bourassa
*today only If your child is struggling with some work and would like assistance, they are welcome to join in on
our new “Homework Hour.” This is time when I will be on TEAMs to provide direct assistance and

10:00-10:30 Whole Class Reading Activity: The Twits by Roald Dahl
We are going to try out reading a chapter book together! We have a short one to begin The
chapter book we are going to start with is called “The Twits” by Roald Dahl. As I read, students are
encouraged to doodle or draw what they visualize in the book. They can also write comments
about the book, questions they have, etc. We will pause throughout this book to work on reading
comprehension skills.

2
Please note: this book has a couple of times where Mr. and Mrs. Twit are drinking beer, but there
is no further details that naming beer as their drink (i.e., “One morning she took out her glass eye
and dropped it into Mr. Twit’s mug of beer when he wasn’t looking.”). It also has a quick mention
about little boys running away from Mr. and Mrs. Twit’s house without pants on. If you have any
concerns or questions about the content of this book, please do not hesitate to connect with me.

10:30-11:05 Snack and Physical Activity Break

11:05-11:20 Math Mini-Lesson: Comparing Numbers Introduction
We will introduce the greater than and less than symbols. Students will complete page 44 by
cutting out the symbols and gluing them on the page where appropriate. If students are struggling,
please use manipulatives or pictures to represent numbers, then complete the greater than/less
than statement.
11:20-11:40 Math Independent Work Time
Students will complete page 44.
Number of the day = 5 (students will complete page 83)
11:40-11:55 Math Mini-Lesson: Comparing Numbers to 50
Students will apply their understanding of greater than and less than to larger numbers. If students
are struggling, please use manipulatives or pictures to help them develop their number sense.
Students will complete pages 49 and 50.
11:55-12:25 Math Independent Work Time
Students will complete pages 49 and 50.
Number of the day = 6 (students will complete page 84)
12:25-1:20 Snack and Physical Activity Break
1:20-1:40 Science Demonstration: Racing Liquids
We will do an activity in which liquids will “race” down a cookie sheet! We will make predictions
about which liquids will travel the fastest and win the race. We will complete this activity a few
times with a few different liquids and compare. We will then talk about liquid viscosity (how
thicker liquids move slower than thinner liquids)
1:40-2:00 Science: Challenge Time!
Your job is to try to make a thick liquid with high viscosity move quicker across a surface. Good
liquids to try this with include honey and corn syrup. How can we manipulate the honey or corn
syrup so it moves faster down the cookie sheet?
2:00-2:05 Share
Were you successful in manipulating the thick liquid to move faster? How did you do it?
2:05-2:20 Science Experiment Demonstration: Water Droplets
Students will place a water droplet on a piece of wax paper. Take some time to observe the shape
of it. Place another droplet nearby and observe what happens. Add a third drop. Try to “cut” the
droplets in half using a popsicle stick and observe what happens. Try blowing on the droplets.
2:20-2:35 Independent Work Time: Water Droplet Exploration
Put a water droplet or two or three on a piece of wax paper. Can you move the drop with a butter
knife? Can you divide the drop into smaller ones? What happens when you put a few drops on
your wax paper and blow on them? Can you make water droplets move together to form bigger
droplets?
COMPARE: Try doing the same activities with a different liquid. In what ways does it act similar or
different than water?
2:35-3:25 Homework ‘Hour’ with Miss Bourassa
If your child is struggling with some work and would like assistance, they are welcome to join in on
our new “Homework Hour.” This is time when I will be on TEAMs to provide direct assistance and

1:20-1:40 Social Studies: Bridges!
Let’s talk about bridges!! What are the purpose of bridges? Think about the bridges that we have
in Lethbridge. Why were they built? What is the alternative to bridges? Why are many
communities built by rivers?
Then, we will look at bridges that exist in Saskatoon. There are A LOT of them! Why might there be
so many bridges? We will look at these bridges to try to find commonalities between them.
1:40-2:00 Independent Work Time: Build a Bridge!
4
Can you build a bridge? How far of a distance can your bridge span? Challenge yourself to make it
span a longer distance. This is a great opportunity for critical thinking and perseverance!
2:00-2:10 Social Studies: World’s Largest Research
Saskatchewan, like many places, is home to many of the “World’s Largest” tourist attractions. Why
would a place make a “world’s largest?” We will discuss different reasons why communities might
choose specific symbols.
2:10-2:35 Independent Work Time
Time for students to complete their “world’s largest” research. Students will google the “world’s
largest” for the communities on the provided pages, then draw a picture of the symbol that the
community has chosen.
2:35-3:25 Homework ‘Hour’ with Miss Bourassa
If your child is struggling with some work and would like assistance, they are welcome to join in on

11:05-11:10 Math Mini-Lesson: Comparing Numbers using 10s and 1s
We can compare numbers much faster when we use the 10s and 1s. Today we will practice
identifying the 10s and 1s in a number. We can represent 10s and 1s on ten frames or using base
10 blocks. Beaded number lines also work wonderfully with representing 10s and 1s.
11:10-11:40 Math Independent Work Time
Students will complete pages 53 and 54.
Number of the day = 7 (students will complete page 85)
For extra practice comparing numbers using 10s and 1s, try pages 70 and 71 in the extra practice
booklet.
11:40-11:55 Math Mini-Lesson: Making Comparisons
Students will need to use their understanding of number sense to come up with a number that is
greater than or less than a given number. There are many possible answers, but students are
5
encouraged to keep the numbers less than or equal to 50. Feel free to use manipulatives or
pictures to complete this task!
11:55-12:25 Math Independent Work Time
Students will complete page 57
Number of the day = 8 (students will complete page 86)
12:25-1:20 Snack and Physical Activity Break
1:20-1:35 Social Studies – review
We will go over the answers to yesterday’s world’s largest research.
Social Studies: What would your World’s Largest be?
Students can either choose what Lethbridge’s World’s Largest monument should be, or pick a
symbol that would represent their life and decide what their “World’s Largest” would be (for
example, I might have the world’s largest book because I like to read.). Students will need to draw
a picture of their monument and write a description of why that symbol was chosen.
1:35-2:00 Social Studies – Independent Work Time
Students will work on their symbols (see description above).
2:00-2:20 Social Studies – Rural vs. Urban
We’ll begin by reviewing rural and urban from last year. Then, we will take a look at some activities
and things to do in Saskatchewan and decide if these are things that take place in a rural setting or
an urban setting. We will fill in our Venn diagram as we go.
2:20-2:35 Independent Work Time
Students will demonstrate their understanding of rural and urban by drawing a picture of a rural
community (farm, small town) and an urban community (city).
2:35-2:45, 3:15- Miss Bourassa’s Office Hours
3:25 Feel free to connect with me if you have any questions or concerns! I will be busy from about 2:45-
3:15 but will respond as soon as I can once I am available!

Today’s Announcements:
✓ We are doing something new in Resource Exchange today! When you pick up your package, please DROP OFF
your child’s published book! I would love to take a look at the hard copy, make a copy of it, and then return
the book to you next week. Thanks!
8:30-8:45 Math Mini-Lesson: Relating Numbers to 5 and 10
A great number sense skill to develop is relating numbers to 5 and 10. This will come in handy
when we get to rounding, adding, and subtracting, but it is also very useful for comparing numbers.
We encourage students to begin thinking about numbers as they compare to the anchors of 5 and
10 (for example, knowing that 6 is one more than 5, or that 13 is three more than 10.) This can be a
trickier concept for students to grasp, but representing numbers on 10 frames help students
visualize (note, to represent numbers this way, fill in the top row first, then the bottom row of a 10
frame).
8:45-9:15 Math Independent Work Time
Students will complete page 60.
9:15-10:00 Fact Friday
Suggested allotment:
6
