11:05-11:20 Math Mini-Lesson: Introducing Place Value
We will introduce place value by exploring base 10 blocks. Base 10 blocks
are a manipulative we can use to understand numbers. They are a great
way to represent how much a number is. We have already touched on
this topic when talking about filling up ten frames. This week we will be
doing lots of base-10 activities. Extra math booklets (addition and
subtraction) are still available and students who zoom through the
assigned material are encouraged to practice their adding and
subtracting.

1
11:20-11:45 Math Independent Work Time
Students will complete pages 1-4 in their math booklet, recording the
number of tens (rods) and ones (units), then putting the numbers
together to get the total value.
11:45-12:00 Math Mini-Lesson: Place Value
In an extension of the first activity we will continue identifying the
number represented by the base 10 blocks.
12:00-12:25 Math Independent Work Time
Students will complete pages 5-8 in their math booklet.

forces/45?code=MTU0OTM2NjEy&t=student
Note: unfortunately we do not have the budget to be able to supply
every student with the magnets required to complete the activities. We
will make do with the magnets you may have at home and some
experiments will be done collectively when needed.
1:35-2:05 Science: Magnet Exploration Time
Students will explore magnets. Feel free to use the ideas on the handout
or in the video. Students will complete the Magnets are Weird page as
they make their discoveries.
2:05-2:15 Science: All About Attraction
You have begun to discover some of the invisible forces that magnets
possess! We are going to now explore the forces of attraction.
Attraction is when a magnet is stuck to an object. You will be making a t-
chart of objects that magnets are attracted to and those they are not
attracted to by testing objects around your home.
2:15-2:35 Science – Independent Work Time
Students will explore which household materials magnets are attracted
to and make a t-chart of their findings.

11:05-11:20 Language Arts: Writing: Writing Letters to Share Ideas about
Characters
We will be beginning a new unit today on opinion writing. The format we will
be using for our opinion writing is letter writing.
In this lesson we will talk about how we can write letters to other people
to tell them about some of our opinions, in particular, we will talk about
our favourite book characters. We will get the interest of our reader by
coming up with an interesting fact or question to start our letter. Then,
we will provide our opinion and support it with evidence. For example, the
opinion that Humphrey is a great character because he helps people.
Then using examples of the people he helps as evidence. For writing time
today, students will be developing opinions of their own and writing a
letter explaining their position.
11:20-11:55 Independent Work Time
Students can:
- Develop an opinion on a specific topic, supported with evidence.
- Write a letter explaining and defending their position.

Our next destination is Iqaluit, Nunavut! We will locate Iqaluit on a map,
then discuss ways we could possibly get to Iqaluit, as well as make
predictions about what we think it might be like when we get there.
1:35-2:00 Social Studies: Exploration Time
You will have some time to explore some links with information about
Iqaluit!

9:00-9:15 Language Arts: Writing: Getting Energy for Writing by Talking
Have you found that it’s easy to get talking about something you’re
interested in or an opinion you have? Talking is a great strategy to build
up energy for writing. We can get enthusiastic when talking and then we
can put that enthusiasm into our writing! Today we are going to talk
about eating vegetables! Students are invited to share their opinions
about vegetables they like and don’t like. Are there favourite or least
favourite vegetables? If students get really enthusiastic we might
break into small groups to continue the discussions.
9:15-10:05 Independent Work Time
4
Students can:
- Develop an opinion on a specific topic, supported with evidence.
- Write a letter explaining and defending their position.

Students will complete pages 11-14 in their math booklet.
12:25-1:20 Snack and Physical Activity Break
1:20-1:30 Social Studies: Getting Ready to visit Iqaluit
There are some important things we need to know before we can visit
Iqaluit! What do you think some important things might be? We will
brainstorm a list of things we need to investigate, then pick a topic so we
can all prepare for our trip!
Topics *may* include:
- What will the weather be like in Iqaluit? What kind of clothes should
we pack?
- Where will we stay in Iqaluit?
- What will we do when we get there?
- How will we get to Iqaluit?
*Students may wish to work independently or work together with a
classmate who has chosen the same topic.
