Parents, please be logged on to TEAMs prior to 8:30. Our meeting will likely be
wrapped up by 8:45.
9:00-9:15 Language Arts: Writing – Revising, Editing & Polishing (Part 1)
When we write, we often consider the first time we’ve written things as
“drafts.” Can you imagine how many drafts writers make before their books
are actually published? Most writers have to go back and edit and revise their
stories a bunch of times before it makes it to the shelves of bookstores and
classrooms! When we revise our work, we are going back to make it better
than it was before. Maybe we are bringing our characters to life, maybe we are
adding description, maybe we are re-writing something to make it sound better.
When we revise, it doesn’t mean that our story before was bad, it just means
that we’ve learned a way to make it better and that learning is very important!
9:15-9:40 Independent Work Time: REVISE
Students are expected to revise stories they have already written. This can be
done by rewriting, adding revision strips, erasing, etc.
9:40-9:50 Mini-Lesson Part 2
Once writers are happy with the revisions they have made to their writing, they
also go back and edit their work to make sure they don’t make any silly
mistakes. Writers often use an editing checklist that has important things, but
also their goals so they can check to make sure they don’t forget to work on
those! I have sent home an editing checklist that your child can use to edit
their writing!
9:50-10:15 Independent Work Time: EDIT
Students are expected to edit stories they have already written using the
editing checklist sent home in last week’s package.
With any remaining time, they can continue revising or begin a new story.
10:15-10:30 Share

1
Students may share with their peers their most recent writing work. Please
remind your student that we are trying to keep our sharing brief—they don’t
need to read it all, highlighting what is new is enough.
10:30-11:05 Snack and Physical Activity Break
11:05-11:20 Language Arts: Reading
We are beginning our small reading groups today! This will change how our mini-
lesson looks because each group will be getting instructional time where they will
be learning targeted strategies. We will talk a little bit more about what our
small groups will look like when we meet for the first time! We’ll give this a go
and revise how small groups are run if need be!
11:20-12:10 Independent Work Time Reading Small Groups
Suggested allotment: 11:20-11:35: Group 1 (Domeiko, Zachery,

Today our science experiment will be to test the best seals and bonds to use
for our boat. We have tested waterproof materials for the body of our boat,
and now we will test which adhesive materials are best to keep our boats
waterproof! Students will be making three or four tin foil boats using the
template below. Each boat will have a different adhesive in the corners to hold
it together.

There are lots of different ways that boats can move. Today we will talk
about three of these ways: using a paddle, using a sail, and using a motor.
Paddle Boat Demonstration
Miss Bourassa will demonstrate how we can use a paddle to propel our boats. I
will use an elastic band and sturdy piece of plastic to create a paddle. If you
are also wanting to create a paddle boat at home, you are more than welcome
to!
Sailboat Demonstration
Miss Bourassa will demonstrate how we can use sails and wind to steer our
boats! We will test different sized and shaped sails as well as their position on
the boat.
Jet Boat Demonstration
Miss Bourassa will use a balloon to demonstrate how we can add a motor to
our boat to make it move.
After each demonstration we will discuss the pros and cons of each different
method.
1:55-2:20 Science Reflection: Creating Boats that Move
When we return from our week off, students will be creating their own boats
(eeek so exciting!). These boats must have a method to for moving. Right now,
students will need to rank the three different methods from best to worst
and justify why each is in the position it is in (based on the pros and cons list we
discussed while testing). Students will need to take a video or audio clip of their

4
ranking and their explanation of the way they ranked the methods of
movement.

10:00-10:10 Whole Class Reading Activity – “The Thankful Book”
Thanksgiving is coming up quickly! At Thanksgiving, we often think of things we
are thankful for. Being thankful means that we understand how lucky we are
to have what we have and we explain just why we feel this way! We will be
5
watching a video of “The Thankful Book” written and read by Todd Parr.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jp3EiSTywX4
10:10-10:30 Independent Work Time
Students will write and draw pictures of the things they are thankful for. This
can be in the form of a “thankful collage”, a book, or even just a list. Students
are strongly encouraged to think of the reasons behind WHY they are thankful
for what they have!
10:30-11:05 Snack and Physical Activity Break
11:05-11:20 Language Arts: Writing Mini-Lesson: What makes realistic fiction realistic?
Many of the stories we’ve been writing lately would fall under the category of
“realistic fiction.” These are stories that are made up, but seem like they could
happen in real life. We’re going to take a look at some realistic fiction stories
today and ask ourselves what makes realistic fiction realistic? Using a mentor
text, we will examine ways that stories are made to seem real. These could
include where the story takes place (somewhere we can relate to, like at our
house, rather than in a volcano or on a spaceship), using characters we are
familiar with (like dogs or cats as opposed to lions). When we are writing realistic
fiction stories, we need to keep in mind what our audience (reader) is already
familiar with.
11:20-11:55 Independent Work Time
Students are expected to use this time to write. They can revise their writing
for realistic fiction elements, or begin a new story with the idea of making it
realistic fiction. They may also:
✓ Continue a story they have previously started.
✓ Write a new story in a series they have already started.
✓ Add illustrations to their stories.
✓ Add labels to their illustrations.
✓ Begin a new stories or series altogether.
11:55-12:10 Share
Students are invited to share their most recent pieces of writing.
12:10-1:20 Snack and Physical Activity Break
1:20-1:35 Social Studies: Introduction to Saskatoon
We are beginning something exciting in Social Studies now! We are going to be
taking a look at a city you may have heard of before…Saskatoon!! Saskatoon is
located in Saskatchewan and is the prairie city we will be investigating for the
next two months.
We will begin our examination of Saskatoon by focusing on the province it is in:
Saskatchewan. We will look at a book with some information about
Saskatchewan.

1:45-1:55 Social Studies: Saskatchewan “My 5 Things”
Together as a class we will brainstorm (at least) 5 things we have learned
about Saskatchewan from watching the video and reading the book and then
ask (at least) 5 questions of things we want to know more about or
wonderings we still have. If your child has any further wonderings, feel free to
submit them on Dojo!

6
1:55-2:05 Social Studies: What are LANDFORMS?

wrapped up by 8:45.
9:00-9:15 Language Arts: Writing Mini-Lesson: Writers “Show, Not Tell”
We have talked in our reading sessions about making a mental movie or picture
in our head while we read a book. Good writers show their readers what is
happening in the story. One way writers do this is by picturing their story, then
adding lots of the realistic, exact details they are picturing to their writing. That
way, their readers can picture it too. Just like we did the other day, we want to
focus on things that our readers are probably familiar with.
9:15-9:40 Independent Work Time
Students are expected to use this time to write, taking note of the strategy
we just learned and trying to incorporate it into their writing. Students may
also:
7
