Pure Tamil Baby Names for Girls

Sangam Tamil Names for Girls – Most of these names are from Sangam Tamil words – Many ancient Tamil words
have more than one meaning.  Most Tamils today don’t have Tamil names because of our religions.

Many scholars have said that Thiru is not Tamil.  It is the Sanskrit Shri, that has been adapted to Tamil.

It should be a matter of pride to have a Tamil name.  Here are some ancient words.  There are many names here
which sound modern, but have ancient roots.

Browse and see whether you find any words that can be used as names. 

None of the Akam poems (over 75% of Sangam literature is Akam) in Sangam have any names of the heroine or Recent Posts
hero. That’s the convention. The poets wanted people at all ages to feel that they are part of the poems, and hence
no names. However, we lost out on names. They can reference kings and other poets by names.  Names of poets
in Sangam usually have the names of their towns, and are descriptive of their professions etc.  In Puram, we have Pure Tamil Baby Names
the king’s names which are again very long because of the descriptive adjectives before and after the original
name. This (in the manner that I have listed) is the closest with can get with using these ancient words as names.
We need to use ancient Tamil words and coin modern names.

 If you analyze other language names, they are also just ‘words’ in the language – which eventually become
accepted names.  We use northern language words like ‘Priya’, which is very much like  the Tamil ‘Anbu’. We are January 2011
not used to using such sweet Tamil words.  We need to change that with pride. Our language is one of the oldest
languages in the world. There are very few languages with incredible literature from 2 thousand years ago.

Names like Mala, Maya (that which doe not die or end) and Akila (Akil wood – eaglewood) can be shown with Tamil Categories
roots.  However, the fact that they also have Sanskrit meanings (quite different from the Tamil meanings, no
relation to the Tamil words), it is best to avoid them and go for clearly obvious Tamil names.

I hope we take pride in giving Tamil names to our children.   Has anybody heard of the beautiful Tamil name Selvi or
Kayalvizhi given to babies in northern India? Why do we take their names?

A great job! And true, we don’t use Tamil names thinking they are just words!!! We don’t like the name
ெவ佪睹ைள but there are many English people with name White, Brown etc. We think anything from
other languages is modern, this mindset has to change!
