Proposal Title: Grapefruit (Citrus Paradisi) Peel as a Potential Sorbent for Oil Spills

Rationale:

With the rapid industrialization, especially offshore oil exploitation, frequent leakage
incidents of oils/organic solvents have adversely affected ecological systems and environmental
resources. Therefore, great interest has been shown in developing new materials to eliminate
these organic pollutants, which have become worldwide problems. In this study, a cost-effective,
environmentally friendly was prepared from grapefruit peel. Unwanted grapefruit peel could be
re-purposed into ultra-light sponges that can clean up oil spills, while also reducing food waste.
A lot of studies have tackled using fruit peels as oil absorption. But in this study, researchers will
focus on the potential of Grapefruit and its effectiveness in absorbing oil spills. This study would
serve as a guide for researchers that wish for a similar topic, and might also help provide a new
idea for the innovation of a cleaning utensil specifically used in a kitchen.
