Abstract

Technology is constantly integrated into life, and artificial intelligence (AI)

is one of the technological products. Recently, computer scientists have

focused on developing and upgrading AI applications. With learning ability, AI

can deal with big flow of data and conduct accurate result. Furthermore, in order

to achieve goals, companies apply AI technology on robot control system. As

the database grows, it can solve problems easily with analytical capability.

However, it is costly to structure a new AI system. To increase work efficiency,

employees are replaced by the AI. By knowing these disadvantages, computer

scientists continue to update AI technology because they are adhering to the

belief that technology changes the future.

Introduction

In this modern age, a daily life of humans is affected by electronic

products. For example, the programmed electronic devices are used to reduce

workloads and increase efficiency. Artificial intelligence(AI) is a programmed

integrated system which can be smarter when every time it analyses and stores

user data, moreover, it responds requests based on database (Gambus &

Shafer, 2017; Tecuci, 2011). Therefore, many companies invest huge amounts

of money in the development of AI because it provides other ways to meet

company needs and improve productivity. This report will explain the reason

that the innovation of artificial intelligence technology had been developed

rapidly in these recent years and the disadvantages of implementation of this

technology.

Function

AI has a central system called knowledge representation and also known

as storage of knowledge. This part of AI collects and stores data such as laws,

relations, objects, categories or actions and forwards the data to problem

solving engine to infer the answer based on the external environment elements

(Tecuci, 2011). Furthermore, AI has been programmed to able learn knowledge

automatically. It has the ability to learn like a human and able to construct the

best strategy to finish a task based on its knowledge (Nilsson, 2014). New entry

of data or addition of component might be included as the factor of learning.

The developers of AI can manually change the data, or the learning outcome

can be changed through interaction with humans. AI can enhance their

knowledge through experience or problems, so that it can prevent from doing

the same mistake (Hamet & Tremblay, 2017; Nilsson, 2014). AI is developed to

reason and structure the information by using algorithm which is programmed

by computer engineer. Some social media websites are using AI to deal with

the huge amount of data online There is a wide variety of data available online,

and AI can use existing information to analyse and identify types of new entry

data (O’Leary, 2013). Thus, AI must have sufficient algorithms and information

to deal with all kinds of new data. In addition, AI will be considered as great

innovation in human history because AI has a built-in natural language

processing system which enables computers to understand human language.

Knowledge representation is important in natural language processing. AI have

to infer the message from user based on contextual knowledge (Nilsson, 2014;

Shi, 2014). In order to improve the accuracy of reasoning results, developers

have to enhance the intelligent behaviour. Computer engineer should stimulate

the ability of predicting, forecasting and deciding based on AI’s knowledge.

Nowadays, many electronic devices have speech recognition ability which is

supported by AI. Those devices will carry out certain tasks when they hear the

commands from users. For example, Siri in Apple phones, its speech

recognition engine can process commands from humans and give responses

based on its knowledge.

Advantages of AI

The application of technology to the system can bring many benefits to

mankind. AI can process data quickly and produce result in short period to

achieve work efficiency. For example, O’Leary (2013) states that AI has been

implemented to help in analysation of data and decision making. Most of online

management systems applied AI technology to process big flow of the

exploding information and arrange unstructured data. Another advantage is

data collection, AI can be used to collect customers or user information by

tracking their browsing history. Activity of the user are recorded in AI’s

database, it will infer occupation or hobby of user after analysed the browsing

data. Most revenue of social media websites is selling users interest and

information to companies to gain advertisement profit (Marketing, 2018).

Furthermore, to achieve robotic automation, engineers apply AI technology on

robots and machines. Sykes (2018) explains that manufacturers use robotic

system to increase productivity and achieve cost saving because robots can

speed up production process and free up manpower. Robots can operate in 24

hours without rest, so companies rather use robots to manufacture products.

Disadvantages of AI

There are some disadvantages of using AI technology on vital systems.

First is high cost, before establishing an AI system, companies have to buy the

hardware and hire programmer to create program which apply to the system.

The hardware is normally expensive so that the maintenance and repair fees

are costly (Fekety, 2015; Reddy, 2016). In addition, due to high performance of

AI, there are many employees are replaced by AI to manage vital system. This

led trend of massive unemployment and that might cause another consequence

effect to community. For example, if humans overlay on AI system, with the

assistance of AI, the multitasking and thinking abilities will be gradually

diminished (Fekety, 2015).

Conclusion

Development and improvement of AI have been growth dramatically.

Companies disregard the risk and investment costs for upgrading current AI,

because they know that the new AI technology will return more than they

invested (Commins, P, 2017). With the trend of applying AI, this technology is

commonly used in many major system, for example most of the online stock

market is monitored and managed by AI because it can deal with massive

amounts of data to shorten trading time (O’Leary, 2013). Companies use this

technology to increase revenue and robots become the replacement of workers.

Although there are disadvantages if humans use AI technology continuously,

there is no denying that AI does make life easier. In conclusion, the idea of

inventing AI may be insane in 20th century, but after efforts of many computer

scientists, AI finally formed. The current AI has made various contributions to

society. AI technology has become an indispensable part of daily life.
