Thermodynamics I – Quiz 4.

1. Tank A has a volume of 400 L and contains argon gas @ 250 kPa, 30 ˚C. Cylinder
B contains a frictionless piston of mass such that a pressure of 150 kPa inside the
cylinder is required to raise the piston. The valve connecting the two is now opened,
allowing the gas to flow into the cylinder. Eventually the argon reaches a uniform
state of 150 kPa, 30 ˚C throughout. Calculate the work done by the argon during
this process.

2. Given the cross sectional area of the piston to be 0.06 m2 and initial volume of 30
L. The piston mass is such that 300 kPa is required to raise the piston against
ambient pressure inside. When the piston has moved to the point where the
contained volume is 75 L, the piston encounters a linear spring that requires 360
kN to deflect it by 1 m. Given the initial state, mass = 4 kg, temperature = 35 ˚C (
L + V ) and the pressure at final state is 7 MPa. Determine the final stae of the water
and calculate the work done.

3. A refrigerant is compressed from 30 to 180 psia and the specific volume decreases
from 9 to 2 cubic ft per pound. Determine the polytropc exponent compression.

4. A spherical balloon contains air at P1 = 150 kPa and is placed in a vacuum. It has
an initial diameter of D1 = 0.3 m. The balloon is heated until its diameter is D2 = 0.4
m. It is known that the pressure in the balloon is proportional to its diameter.
Calculate the work of expansion.
