Memo From: Max Flowe, P.Eng.

Date: January 18, 2021
Subject: CIVL 316 Labs

Welcome to the new CIVL 316 laboratories, a strategy that significantly changes the context in which you’ll be
evaluated and how you interact while conducting the experiments!

You are a consulting firm who’s been contracted by NEARCreek Industries Ltd (a large engineering and
construction company) to provide experimental data to support a number of their projects. You will conduct four
sets of experiments about which you will produce three engineering reports. The results of your last experiment
will be in the form of an oral presentation and project report with your assigned groups.

How you respond to these requests are up to you; there are no formulaic report requirements and no one is going
to tell you exactly what you need to do. If you are confused, use your judgement. Requirements can often be
vague because clients sometimes don’t know what they want. You are expected to behave as professionals –
roles you will occupy in only a few years. Not all answers can be found in textbooks - you will have do some
research on certain topics. Please be aware that CIVL 316 will likely be harder than many of your other classes.

The TAs in the course will occupy two roles: During the lab-related tutorial session itself, they will act as TAs,
explaining the setup and helping you conduct the virtual experiment. Outside of the lab session, they are Project
Engineers with NEARCreek. They are the senior engineers of your client - interact with them as such, through
the course Canvas discussion board.

Evaluation will effectively be the likelihood that your consulting firm would be hired again. This encompasses
all interaction between yourselves and the ‘client,’ the quality of the reports, presentations, communication, etc.
For all intensive purposes, your grade will represent your professionalism.

Some specific evaluation and administration items:

- Lab ‘reports’ are due two weeks after the lab session. If there are no labs that week (eg. reading week),
the due date is your next lab session. Please consult the course schedule for more details.
- You must submit an electronic copy (pdf format) of the report to the report dropbox in the course
CANVAS site
- We reserve the right to not mark a lab that is of low quality. It will be returned and you may resubmit.
- You will receive an individual mark for lab reports.
- The group is required to make a presentation at the end of the labs. Marks for the presentation are
individual. More information about the presentation will be made available later in the term.
- Peer review process via iPeer will be mandatory at the end of the term for evaluating group members’
performance and will be used to modify your marks associated with your lab works.
