 past actions that are completed


e.g. We learnt a lot at the university.
 past actions that are completed; it is known when (and where) the action
happened; time (as well as place) is important
e.g. I did my homework yesterday.
 actions that repeated or existed for some time in the past
e.g. I passed all my school exams. I was a very good student.
 with: yesterday, last night, last year, in 1992, a day ago, a week ago, not long ago, a
long time ago, etc.
e.g. I did my homework yesterday.

 past actions that were completed before another past action


e.g. The film had started when we arrived.
 used with: when, before, after, by, etc.
e.g. She went out after we had eaten the dinner.
 when the sequence of past events is clear, past simple can be used instead of past
perfect
e.g. I went out after we finished the dinner.

 actions that started and continued before another past action happened
 with: for, since, all day, how long, etc.
e.g. I had been reading for 2 hours when James called and said I he was coming.
