1. Past simple: Uses
- completed action - Last week, we visited the zoo.
- repeated actions in the past - I went to school by bus when
I was in the 8th grade.
- main events in a story - Mike pushed the door and looked
inside the room.
! we also use past simple for actions which happened one
after the other.
- general truths about the past - Fifty years ago, people didn’t
spend their time on different devices.
 Hints: is often used after - yesterday, last …., in January,
in 2020, an hour ago

2. Past continuous: Uses


- actions happening at a moment in the past -
At 10 last night, I was watching a new episode.
- two actions happening at the same time -
! actions were in progress
My mum was cooking dinner while my sister was cleaning
her room.
- background info in a story -
It was raining so hard that Mike pushed the door and went
into the room.
 We can use both tenses in the same sentence.
 The past simple action interrupts the past continuous
activity.
While I was playing an online game, my computer
crashed.
My computer crashed while I was playing.
When he came, I was reading an article.
