    Dozens of citizens living in the mountain town of Detroit, Oregon made a desperate bid for survival as wildfires closed in on their town in September 2020. The fires had started on September 6th and spread to Detroit the following day, trapping the townspeople. The helicopter that was supposed to rescue them was unable to due to the fires, leaving the citizens with no choice but to find another way to escape the encroaching flames. Eventually, firefighters were able to clear debris from a Forest Service road through the Lionshead Fire, enabling the citizens to escape to safety down that route.
