Introduction. The phenomenon of global warming increases the risk of health problems,
having direct and indirect effects. Family doctors, as the front line of the medical
system, are the primary contact point in informing and raising the awareness of global
warming and population health. Through their role as health promoters and educators, they
are sources of reliable information.
Materials and methods. A pilot study was organized in order to identify the level of
knowledge and practice applied by doctors, interviewing 54 doctors. The results presented
in this paper refer to 6 out of those 41 applied questionnaire items. The methods used in
the study: descriptive-bibliographic, sociological, epidemiological and statistical.
Results. Analyzing global warming phenomenon awareness, we found out that most family
doctors know about the danger of global warming (94.5%), 46.3% - they mentioned that they
noticed a slight heating, 48.1% - pronounced warming. At the same time, 2 people did not
notice the climate change, and one person felt that climate was cooling.
In half of the cases (57.4%), family doctors mentioned that "majority of patients"
consulted during extreme heating periods complained of extreme temperatures influence.
About one-third (31.5%) of physicians said that "all patients" had complaints and only
11.1% of physicians said that "a small number of patients" had warming complaints. Most
family doctors (66.7%) said there was a lack of evidence and reported the cases of
patients with complaints caused by high temperature during extreme heating periods, 68.5%
of doctors consider the recording and reporting of cases necessary.
Conclusions. There is a clear need for further training of the relationship between
climate change and global warming on health and the ways in which these relationships can
be communicated without undermining the physician-patient relationship.
Keywords: global warming, heat waves, family doctor, patient.
