Temporality of Man
⁃ Human person as constituted by His Past, Present and Future
⁃ Intersection of the past and the future in the now present
⁃ Inseparability of the Past, Present and the Future 😭

A. Man ‘s presence as Now Presence

- the Present in the Present (because of time and space) - you are always present
in a particular time and space

⁃ Man as a embodied subject in the world and the world is present in him
or her
⁃ Man is present in the world at a Particular Time and Place (spatio-
temporal presence)
⁃ But man’s presence here and now, his present moment is not separated
from the past and future.
Basically,
⁃ The presence of man in the present is also the presence of the past and
the future in the present
⁃ Man is composite of past, present and future that define the
temporality of the human person
Why in the present?
⁃ Because I am occupying the time and space in the present

Now presence is not a now presence which is

⁃ not connected to the past and the future
⁃ Without past and future
Man’s nowness is not the nowness of eternity
⁃ Rather, man’s nowness is a Temporal Now since it is RELATED to the PAST
and the FUTURE
If you do not have a past, you are eternal

B. Man’s Presence as a presence of the Past in the Now Presence

Past
⁃ does not stay in the past
⁃ They retained in the present

Retention (Retained)
⁃ now presence of the former presence
⁃ In every now of man, there is always of retention, a now presence of a
past presence
How?
⁃ it shapes, it influences the present reality, and not buried or buried
in the past.
⁃ As long as the past determine, influence the present, then the past is
present in the present.

C. Man’s Presence as the presence of the Future in the Present

Future
 ⁃ unfinished, the “Not Yet” of Man
⁃ Not isolated from the present, but the future is intrinsically
(internal connection) present in the now
⁃ The present contains the possibility of the future in the present
⁃ It is not yet fully realized, but it is present as a possibility

There is no future if there is no possibility of the present

In summary, man is the synthesis of the past, present and the future.

⁃ Because of his or her subjectivity, man has the certain capacity to be
creative and responsible (freedom) to his past, present and future

Past
⁃ He could grow in his consciousness of the past
⁃ He could attach new values to it
⁃ He could accept or reject his past
Future
⁃ He can be creative in his consciousness of his future
⁃ He has the capacity to realise himself, his possibilities, his
containment in the present and his future
⁃ His possibilities are not simple to be realised by external forces

Summary:
⁃ Man is Historical because:
⁃ Conscious
⁃ Unique
⁃ Responsible cross-section of the past, present and future.
“Cross-section”
⁃ various levels
⁃ Physical, Interpersonal, Social, Historical and Personal Lines of
events

Man is ... (Present Man)

unique (your experiences make man unique)

Responsible intersection (you can put new meaning of your past events)
Synthesis of the Past, Present and the Future events and realities

According to Dostoyevksy
⁃ man is where all the boundaries meet
 ⁃ man is multi-dimensional

Different Dimensions of man’s Temporality-Historicity

1. Physical - physicality, present body, materiality, physique
A. My body as a cross-section of the Past, Present and the Future
Present
⁃ present body,
⁃ determined by the past and the future
⁃ not limited by the human genes of my parents.
Past
⁃ result of the interaction of the genes of my bloodline
⁃ Human Genes = 25,000
⁃ Vertebrates = 700,000,000
⁃ Coming to be in Life Form = 2.5 billion years
⁃ Earth = 5 billion years
⁃ Universe = 15 billion years
⁃ You have a present body because of the existence of different lifeforms
starting from the universe.
Future
⁃ the present body contains;
A. Unique Capacities
B. Unique Limitations
Example:
⁃ you want to be a runner (possibility, Capacities)
⁃ However, you don’t have any legs (Limitations)
FROM THAT LIMITATIONS, IT CLOSES UP THE POSSIBILITY.
WHAT LIMITS US FROM OUR POSSIBILITIES IS OUR BODY.
Such things are PRESENT in the PRESENT.

B. My body as a unique cross-section of the Past, Present and the Future

⁃ The past, present and the future meets together in a unique way.
Past
⁃ my past experience retains in me and determines the present in a UNIQUE
WAY.
Present
⁃ has a unique features and characteristics
⁃ contains a unique capacities and limitations
Future
⁃ contains a unique capacities and limitations

C. My body as a conscious cross-section of the Past, Present and the Future

⁃ I am conscious of my present body because of its nature
⁃ I am aware of my present body’s uniqueness
⁃ You are aware of your capacities and limitations

D. My body as a creative and responsible cross-section of the Past, Present and the
Future
Past
⁃ I can be creative of my past experiences
How?
1. Putting new meanings of your past experiences
2. You may accept or reject your past experiences
Future
⁃ You can be creative by using your capacities for your future
⁃ You can be creative by handling your capacities and limitations well

2. Interpersonal
⁃ refers to one’s relationship with other persons
⁃ I am being identified as I am with regards with my relationships with
other persons.
⁃ Family, Friends, Neighborhood

A. The Interpersonal Dimension as a Cross-Section of Past, Present and Future

Relationships
⁃ the present relationship is established in the past
⁃ Example: I am the son of my parents because they love each other in the
Past.
⁃ You can be a good son or a disobedient son (that may happen in the
future but is present in the present)
