Assignment: Strand A

Purpose:
Time to create a mindmap! The purpose of the assignment is to understand the
Determinants of Health and how they relate to you on an individual level. This is
important not only for the completion of this course, but for your future! If you can
assess how the determinants of health coexist and relate to each other, you work
towards making positive changes in your daily life. This assignment is an important
building block for the next assignment.
What’s a Determinant of Health?
Personal Factors - heredity (genes, etc), resilience (ability to self-monitor, self-
awareness, assertiveness, ability to solve problems, coping skills, empathy and
compassion, sense of humours, etc)

Social Factors - Strong social support network (e.g., family, friends, trusted adults,
connections to school and community supports) contributes to better personal health
(e.g., provides help to solve problems and deal with adversity; increases feelings of self-
worth by reinforcing a sense of belonging and connection; helps to prevent depression
and anxiety)

Environmental Factors - Current environmental issues and their implications for

personal health (e.g., poor air quality increases the risk of developing respiratory
diseases and can worsen existing respiratory conditions such as asthma and allergies;
climate change increases the potential for water- and food-borne diseases to spread to
temperate regions; ozone layer depletion increases exposure to UVB rays that can
cause skin cancers and cataracts)
Instructions
Step 1: Decide whether you will create your mindmap electronically or on a piece of
paper. If you choose to do it electronically, there is a template available for you. If you
choose to do it on paper, you may use the electronic template as a guide.

Step 2: Write your name in the central bubble and create branches with each of the
determinants of health that you have learned throughout the course (Personal, Social
and Environmental). Colour-code the determinants.

Step 3: Create at least four (4) branches from each determinant of health that connect
to examples from your lived experience.

Step 4: connect these branches to other determinants of health, nothing remains

completely isolated, they can be connected to other determinants. For example: how
does one example from your personal determinant, impact another example from your
environmental determinant.
