FPM 201: Advanced Agricultural Power and Machinery

Instructions:
Previous Problem:
A 4-wheel tractor, 55 hp Kubota have a rice service area of 200 hectares and 100
hectares corn service area with 2 cropping per year. The total weight of the tractor is 2380 kg.
The tractor is utilized during land preparation using disc plow and harrow. Assume
specifications of the two implements appropriate for the 55 hp tractor.

1. Compute the total energy requirement during Land Preparation using/ applying this
method.
2. Compare the results and analyze what happened on the data.

Tractor: *
Manufacturing Energy 86.77 MJ/kg x 2,380kg = 206,512.60 MJ
Transport Energy 8.8 MJ/kg x 2,380 kg = 20,944 MJ
Repair Energy (Table 10.5) 0.49 x 206,512.60 MJ = 101,191.17 MJ
Total Tractor MTR = 328,647.77 MJ
MTR energy per time 328,647.77 MJ / (12,000 h) * = 27.39 MJ/h
MTR energy per area (27.39 MJ/h) / (1.2 ha/h) = 22.82 MJ/ha
Data are based on tablets and Pimentel et al (1973) *
Assume capacity of 1.2 ha/h **

Disc Plow: *
Manufacturing Energy 86.77 MJ/kg x 410 kg = 35,575.70 MJ
Transport Energy 8.8 MJ/kg x 410 kg = 3,608 MJ
Repair Energy (Table 10.5) 0.97 x 35,575.7 MJ = 34,508.43 MJ
Total Tractor MTR = 73,692.13 MJ
MTR energy per time 73,692.13 MJ/ (2,000 h) * = 36.85 MJ/h
MTR energy per area (36.85 MJ/h) / (1.2 ha/h) = 30.71 MJ/ha
Data are based on tablets and Pimentel et al (1973) *
Assume capacity of 1.2 ha/h **

Disc Harrow: *
Manufacturing Energy 86.77 MJ/kg x 340 kg = 29,501.80 MJ
Transport Energy 8.8 MJ/kg x 340 kg = 2992 MJ
Repair Energy (Table 10.5) 0.61 x 29,501.8 MJ = 17,996.10 MJ
Total Tractor MTR = 50,489.90 MJ
MTR energy per time 50,489.90 MJ/ (2,000 h) * = 25.24 MJ/h
MTR energy per area (27.39 MJ/h) / (1.2 ha/h) = 21.04 MJ/ha
Data are based on tablets and Pimentel et al (1973) *
Assume capacity of 1.2 ha/h **
Total Tractor, Plow, and Harrow MTR Energy:
= 22.82 MJ/ha + 30.71 MJ/ha + 21.04 MJ/ha = 74.57 MJ/ha
Fuel Energy: (Table 10.9)
= 17.49 L/ha x 36.676 MJ/L = 641.46 MJ/ha
Total MTR and Fuel Energy:
= 74.57 MJ/ha + 641.46 MJ/ha = 716.03 MJ/ha

Observation/s:

o By the calculations gathered it was observed that the total energy per unit area are
increase as the mechanization level increase.
o It shows the importance of input and output ratio to determine the appropriate actions
to the problem of utilization.
o By following similar procedure, the total energy requirements for any yield/ crop can
be determined. Other concepts or ideas can be obtained from other available reference
and data from the different countries.
o It represents processes whose efficiencies has effect on improvement for the farm.
o The calculated data will be reliable for estimating the energy requirements for the
specific crops, specific machines or the combinations.
