Q.2 - Application Questions:
2A. Read the following abstract and answer the questions accordingly:

Study Title: Emotional intelligence skills: is nurses’ stress and professional competence
related to their emotional intelligence training? a quasi-experimental study.

Abstract

Emotional intelligence is a social skill that controls stress and affects one’s ability to cope
with the demands and environmental pressures; it so can improve professional competence in
health care providers such as nursing students. Training on emotional intelligence increases
the mental health and influences the mutual relationships, stress, depression and aggression.
This study aimed to determine the effect of emotional intelligence skills training program on
the stress and academic success of nursing students in a higher education health complex.
This study is a quasi-experimental study with an educational intervention. The participants
included 100 students of nursing selected by stratified random sampling from both genders.
They were randomly categorized into two intervention and control groups including 50
subjects, respectively. We used Meyer and Salvia model in Emotional Intelligence training in
the intervention group. During the training sessions in the intervention group, the control
group did not receive any intervention. Academic stress and professional competence in both
groups were measured before and two weeks after the experiment. SPSS version 21 was used
to analyze the data, using Paired t-test, independent t-test, Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney and
Chi-Square tests. The mean age of the participants was 20±2.14 years old. According to the
results, the mean difference of the changes in the professional competence (p<0.001), total
academic stress (p<0.001), and the four areas of academic stress such as emotional response
(p<0.001), physical response (p<0.001) and physiological response (p<0.001) were
significant. The intervention group, as compared with the control group, showed no
significant effect on the other factors of academic stress such as frustration, conflict,
academic pressure, changes and self-imposed stress. The education of emotional intelligence
components can improve the efficiency of nursing care services and professional competence
due to deceased stress.

a. Is this a qualitative or quantitative study?

b. Was the study experimental or nonexperimental?
c. If the study was experimental, what was the intervention?
d. What was the population?
e. What was the sample?
f. Which sentence in the abstract—if any—indicates what the researchers did to
measure the independent variable in this study?
g. What, if anything, was the dependent variable in this study?
h. Were statistical analyses used to test research hypotheses in this study?
i. For which phase of this study is the amount of time required indicated in the
abstract?
j. Did the researcher use an emergent design?
k. Which sentence in the abstract—if any—indicates what the researchers did to
measure the independent variable in this study?
B2. Below is a summary of some aspects of a nursing study. Read the summary and
then answer the questions that follow:

A researcher was interested in studying the notes made by various members of the
health care team on patients’ electronic health records in terms of their
communication potential and use by various hospital personnel. He began his project
with some general questions, such as, Are the nurses’ entries on patients’ electronic
health records used by other staff? Who is most likely to read nurses’ entries? Do
particular types of entries encourage utilization?

The researcher proceeded to reflect on his own experiences and observations

relative to these issues and reviewed the literature to find whether other researchers
had studied these problems. Based on his literature review and reflections, he
developed the following hypotheses:

1. Nursing notes on patients’ electronic health records are referred to

infrequently by hospital personnel.
2. Physicians refer to nursing notes on the patients’ electronic health
records less frequently than other hospital staff.
3. The frequency with which hospital staff refers to nursing notes is
related to the amount of experience of the nurses making the notes.
4. Nursing notes are more likely to be referred to by hospital staff if the
patient has been hospitalized for more than 5 days than if the patient
has been hospitalized for 5 days or fewer.

a. Does this summary state the research problem?

b. Does this summary present a statement of purpose? If there is a statement of
purpose, what verb communicates the researcher’s intent?
c. Does the summary suggest a qualitative or a quantitative study?
d. Are all of the hypotheses testable as stated—if not, which one(s) could not be
tested?
e. Which of the hypotheses (if any) are null?
f. Which of the hypotheses (if any) are directional?
g. What are the independent and dependent variables in hypothesis 4?
h. Do any of the hypotheses have the same independent variables?
i. Do any of the hypotheses have the same dependent variable?

Q.3 Essay Questions:

3A. Describe the main steps of evaluating the research problem?

3B. What are the main contents of the informed consent?
