COURSE GUIDE FOR GEC 19: LIFE AND WORKS OF RIZAL

Welcome to Life and Works of Rizal course. This course, as mandated by R.A 1425, covers the life
and works of the country’s national hero, Jose Rizal. Among the topics covered are Rizal’s biography and his
writings, particularly the novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, some of his essays, and various
correspondences.

This material is your guide in successfully navigating and finishing this course. Read this material before
starting any lesson in this course because it outlines all information and requirements that you need to
complete the course.

1. Course Introduction
GEC 19: Life and Works of Rizal is a 3-unit lecture course for third year BS Electronics Technology
(BSET) students. This course deals with Rizal’s philosophy, ideals of freedom and nationalism for which our
hero lived and died. It likewise deals with the influences of Rizal towards1896 revolution and the different
perceptions that people have upon the national hero. The course aims at promoting critical view of the social
order in which he lived, through an analysis of his works and letters, his opinions on liberalism, government,
religion, education, as well as his philosophy of living and the relevance of these ideas to the contemporary
Philippine society.

After finishing this course, you should be able to:


a. Discuss Jose Rizal’s life within the context of 19th century Philippines
b. Analyze Rizal’s various works, particularly the novels Noli Me Tanghere and El Filibusterismo
c. Organize Rizal’s ideas into various themes
d. Demonstrate a critical reading of primary sources
e. Interpret the values that can be derived from studying Rizal’s life and works
f. Display an appreciation for education and love of country

3. Mode of Delivery
For this semester, the university identified three (3) types of learners, namely: students with
A. good internet access (able to participate in synchronous activity);
B. Poor to fair internet access (able to participate in asynchronous activities only); and

C. no internet connection.

4. Course Structure & Schedule


The course is divided into eleven (11) topics and further divided into 34 lessons. Each chapter has
its own lessons with corresponding lecture (printed/video recorded), learning activities, and self-
assessment. You are expected to finish all 34 lessons within the 18-week period.

6. Course Requirements / Assessment Activities


The assessment that will be used is categorized into two: formative and summative. For the
formative assessment, you will encounter Self-Assessment quizzes in every module that are intended to aid
you in learning and validate your gained knowledge in each lesson; this will not be recorded or graded.
Summative assessment will all be graded; it will be in three (3) forms:
First are the activities at the end of each module, which will be graded on weekly basis. This will
serve as an immediate feedback mechanism for you to know if you need to go back to the previous
module/lesson.
Second are the Major Outputs per term (one for midterm, and another for final term). The details of
each major output will be discussed on the first day of each term and can be accessed on the course
site.
Third are the Major Exams per term (Midterm and Final Examination). The major exams
scheduled online examinations (See Course Schedule). Details will be given during classes and will
be available in the course site.

Rubrics will be used for the evaluation of your outputs whenever applicable and can be accessed on
the course site.

7. Grading System
As indicated in the course syllabus, your course performance will be evaluated based on the
following criteria:

8. Learning Resources
To aid your learning, resources will be provided along the duration of the course it will be available
on the course site. However, for those with poor internet connection may schedule time to connect to
Campus Wi-Fi and download all term materials. The learning resources are:
1. Modules

Modules will be prepared per lesson and is uploaded in the course site. Each module in the manual
has its own set of Self-Assessment Tests. You are required to read all the modules and take the self-
assessment tests. You will also find the activities at the end of each module which you need to accomplish
and submit on the indicated date.

2. Video Lectures/Resources
Video lectures/resources are additional resources to help you better understand the topic.
They are YouTube videos and the links are provided in the module and course site sorted per topic.
You are not required to watch the videos; however, it will be a great resource should you access it.

3. Additional Reading Materials


Reading assignments are indicated in some of the modules, you are encouraged to read it and
engage in it to ensure understanding. Concepts or lessons from the reading materials are included in
the Self-Assessment Test of their respective modules.

10. Course Policies

The policies listed below may change throughout the semester, depending on the country’s health situation
and other concerns. Students are responsible for learning about these changes. Announcements shall be posted
on the course site.

Ethical Policies:
Students are expected to act with decorum in communicating with the teacher and classmates either one-on-

Academic Integrity Policy:


Plagiarism shall not be tolerated. Students caught submitting papers copied from others and presenting them
as their own shall be given a failing grade. For more information, see: What is Plagiarism?

Policies on Absences and Tardiness:


As we are currently using the distance mode of education, there are no physical classes unless the university
administration finds it safe already to have classroom lectures. For the meantime, we shall study both
synchronously and asynchronously so attendance will not be given rating. Hence, for purposes of
documentation, a google form will be sent minutes before the start of synchronous class for monitoring of
participants. However, there shall be point deductions for tardy submissions of requirements.
