Abstract: Data on increasing air pollution and climate change in European cities
show that more vigorous measures should be taken to overcome these problems. The
way to solve the problem depends on the development of the country, the size of a
city, local urban conditions, etc. Nis is a small city in a country that is in the initial
phase of solving this problem. The paper presents data on the trend of air pollution
in recent years, data on high temperatures in the summer months, as well as
evidence of a large amount of precipitation, which indicate the necessary and urgent
need to solve these problems in the city of Nis. One of the efficient ways is by
designing and building green roofs on new buildings, but also their application on
existing buildings. This practice started a few years ago, but it is still little
represented, which is documented in the paper with examples. Based on the case
study of Nis, a conclusion was drawn about the advantages of using green roofs and
their importance in solving these problems in cities.
Key words: Green roof, Aero pollution, Urban conditions, Urban development

Abstract: Open public spaces represent focal places within settlements as parts of a
city structure. Nowadays, they are classified into various types and categories, such
as parks, squares, children's playgrounds, riverbanks, urban forests, and, even, streets
and sidewalks. Each of these categories has its own significance in the network of
open public spaces because of the content and role it plays in a particular area. This is
especially important for Golubac, as a town in Eastern Serbia in which a diverse
typology of open public spaces has been recognized in a specific limited space,
thanks to its rich cultural heritage, its position along the Danube River, but also the
close proximity of the national park. On the one hand, this offers great opportunities
for the further development of open public spaces, while, on the other hand, certain
specifics in typology bring many limitations.
Also, the richness of culture and heritage has led to a significant increase in the
number of tourists in Golubac in recent years. However, they usually pass through the
city only to reach heritage sites in the town vicinity, such as a Golubac fortress.
Therefore, the subject of this paper is the analysis of the network of open public
spaces in Golubac considering tourists needs. The paper starts with a general
theoretical section on open public spaces, after which it focused on the case study of
Golubac Town. The final contribution of the research is to understand the
interrelationships, connections, significance, obstacles, and limitations in forming
The final aim of this paper is to propose certain guidelines through the typologies of
open spaces in order to bring open public spaces closer to the needs of tourists and
enable them to stay longer in the town of Golubac.

Abstract: The present report is made to identify key issues of Bulgarian building
regulations for the type of warehouse building and distribution center, which is
widely used in contemporary building and construction activities. The main goal is to
assess the scope, completeness and compliance of the applicable law and building
codes, and to determine the prospective directions for supplementation and
development of national laws.
The detailed classification, the general plan and volume scheme of the storage, the
type and composition of the functional zones are initial data for supporting
regulations in respect of warehouse building. The legal provisions have been
systematically analyzed according to each specific object. In the applicable national
law significant nonconformities and incompleteness are found, as well as
unreasonable duplicates of valid documents have been noted. Legislative proposals
for change of the norms are justified by scientific evidence, which is important for
the overall architectural design and the implementation of investment projects.

Abstract: It is necessary to improve the efficiency in the normative regulation for the
planning of the territorial organization and the regional development in Bulgaria.
Legislative reform in the field of spatial planning, urban planning, investment design
and construction is possible in compliance with the professional basic principles, for
which there is a scientific basis and which can motivate the texts of three new laws,
law on spatial planning and regional development, law for urban planning and
construction law. By defining these principles, scientific and professional
cooperation, dialogue and consensus on improving efficiency in the regulatory
framework can be sought.

Abstract: Increasing the population of the earth along with the climate change
creates new requirements. Buildings are becoming an adaptive structure that can be
applied to changing functional, constructive, aesthetic and energy-efficient
requirements for users and occupants.
The buildings will change their shape and parameters of the building envelope to
ensure an optimal microclimate of the premises not affected by the global climatic
and current atmospheric conditions in the natural environment.
The purpose of the presentation in this report is to give the main characteristics of
building tools responding the requirements of consumers and the dynamically
changing environment. The study of the problem includes an analysis of the
architectural and structural elements of the buildings, which have the potential to turn
the building into an adaptive structure -the use of "smart" building materials, building
envelope and building installations.
Special attention is given to the adaptive building envelope as the main intelligent
and reactive component with which the building meets the interaction between user
requirements and environmental changes.

Abstract: Spatial planning competencies lie entirely at the level of the individual
provinces, whose provincial parliaments adopt the Provincial Spatial Planning Laws
(Raumordnungsgesetz des Landes). At the provincial level, laws that are directly or
indirectly related to spatial planning are also adopted: building laws
(Landesbaugesetz), laws for the protection of the appearance of settlements
(Ortsbildschutzgesetz), laws for the protection of old urban areas
(Altstadterhaltungsgesetz), laws for natural protection, laws to stimulate housing
policy, energy laws, etc. The specific names of the legislation vary from province to
province, taking into account regional specifics. Due to the specifics of the capital
Vienna, which has the status of a province, the laws on spatial planning and
construction law are merged into a single Law for the Development, Planning and
Construction of the City of Vienna (Wiener Stadtentwicklungs-. Stsdtplanunggs-und
Baugesetzbuch, in short Bauordnung Wien)

Abstract: In the modern city there is a strong public interest in the quality of open
urban spaces. A well-thought-out design and healthy environment contribute to
increasing the positive indicators of life. This relates both to a person's physical
health and to the development of a sustainable social environment, affecting people‟s
behaviors and usage of outdoor spaces. Through the tools of urban planning, it is
necessary to create an environment that includes all the requirements for a modern
city, and pay attention of the thermal, visual and sound comfort, as well as the needs
of activities and entertainment of the residents. Both the architectural ensembles and
the design of urban spaces have a leading role in determining the appearance and
character of the city, respectively, to define the opportunities that the place can offer
to its users.

Abstract: The topic of the report deals with the possibilities of some functional-
planning making solutions for wine-producing buildings and dairy -in mountainous
and semi-mountainous regions of Bulgaria. As is known, nearly half of the country's
territory includes these areas. Solutions of buildings on inclined terrains are also
suitable for technological and structural aspects. This not only leads to economic
planning of the levels decisions, but also requires optimal possible design solutions
for the floor structures and the underground levels of enclosing structures. The report
proposes a study of such buildings.

Abstract: The subject of the research is optical-quality based color application for
thermal, light and acoustic comfort optimization of a study room. The color appliance
to increase energy efficiency by reducing energy costs for air conditioning and
lighting is one of the most modern tendencies in sustainable development, energy
efficiency and creating a healthy living environment. The main concept is based on
the integration of two areas of color knowledge, as well as the results of research
with the latest technology. The report examines the range of the interior color
scheme. Characteristics of a university study room are analyzed in connection with
the optimization of thermal comfort. Physical properties of the colors have been
studied from the point of view of their application for optimal comfort in the living
environment. Variants of application of colors for optimal comfort in the living
environment are proposed, specifically related to the spatial and functional specifics
of classrooms in universities. Conclusions are drawn about the way in which the
physical properties of colors affect the comfort of living.

Abstract: The paper elaborates on the theoretical basis of the deconstructivist style
as a way to create structures with different purposes. The emphasis is on the
successful and not so successful attempts to rethink the universal application of
"Cartesian space" in the work environment, in the projects of Daniel Libeskind,
Frank Gehry, Coop Himmelblau, Bernard Chumi and Zaha Hadid. The designs show
working environment part of the edifices of various industries -automotive, furniture
production, development and research, auxiliary production sites -energy, fire-
fighting, etc.. What unites them is the desire to cross the boundary of the
conventional and the predictable by all possible means or "the form to follow the
imagination" quoting Bernard Chumi.

Abstract: The paper defines the main space and functional principles of the high-
tech movement in Architecture and its application options in the design process of
residential buildings. Several symbolic projects are analyzed which could prove that
even though it’s rare, high-tech finds its place in the housing architecture. The
reviewed examples are part of the work of Richard Rodgers, Sir Norman Foster,
Nicholas Grimshaw, their partners and many more. All of these could prove that the
unique and symbolic image of a building is not only a trademark for the corporate,
public or industrial edifices.

Abstract: This report summarizes the key challenges faced by the UACEG team
during the implementation of activities in the URBiNAT co-creation process of the
Healthy Corridor in Nadezhda district in Sofia. Important links between the healthy
corridor plan and the changing planning system in-between two planning and
programming periods have been discussed. Possibilities for integration and
delimitation between the Plan and higher-level planning instruments and between the
territorial management instruments at local level are studied. A critical assessment of
the possibility to coordinate phases and time frames, aims and thematic focuses,
processes and results of URBiNAT project and the existing practices and
administrative procedures of Sofia Municipality is made. Recommendations are
suggested for improvement of interactions and communication between scientific
research and introduction of innovations in spatial planning, as well as capacity
building through action research and incremental incorporation of innovations.

Abstract: The system covers the field of reconstructions and renovations for
realization of interior projects, by structuring and organizing the individual
processes. The known systems for realization of interior projects, applicable in digital
environment, consist of web platforms, on which mainly conceptual design proposals
are created on a competitive basis. The work of designers, contractors and project
management is usually done by independent participants, which complicates the
whole process, consumes a lot of resources, does not allow adequate management,
and increases the risk of poor performance of the final product. None of the known
web platforms covers the entire life cycle of the reconstruction and does not support
the customer from the emergence of the investment intention to the completion of the
project.

Abstract: Based on literature review, the paper traces the development of "the right
to the city" concept of the French sociologist and philosopher Henri Lefebvre from
its first publication in 1968 to its present interpretation in the academic debate, social
movements and key documents of the United Nations’ policy on sustainable cities
and communities. The focus is set on the understanding of historically created urban
space as a result of joint action and broad public participation. The author draws
conclusions about the capacity and needed tools of urban planning in Bulgaria to
ensure equal access for different groups of civil actors to the planning and
management of inclusive public space.

Abstract: In practice, the preferences of the client, owner, investor, not exactly
related to architecture, change the original design of the designer, imposing a new
design or change during construction. This is also a condition for shared design. The
aim of the research is to present measurable limits of the shared design, in the process
of conducting a verbally structured interview with the assignor. The object of the
research are functional-compositional, volumetric-spatial and facade-artistic solutions
of constructed residential buildings. The research is in connection with the
systematization of results from completed architectural projects, created on the basis
of a shared concept.

Abstract: The fence is one of the most important elements of the playground.
Properly designed it provides a sense of safety, protection from traffic, limits possible
approaches and adds to play value. While there are different types of playgrounds for
which fencing is recommended, for most cases this is by no means a priori true. On
the contrary – often the fence is an element whose mechanical placement harms both
the urban space and the playground.

Abstract: Prefabricated building systems, part of which are the volumetric modular
structural systems have proven their efficiency. Nowadays the use of modular
technologies has substantially grown up because they offer elements and structures
with improved quality and accuracy in manufacture, characterized by a high degree
of factory completeness. Construction time is saved due to the fast installation of the
building structures. The modular technologies require fewer workers on the building
site and are more environmentally friendly solution than the conventional
construction methods. Prefabricated lightweight volumetric modular structural
systems are used for both low-rise and multi-storey buildings. The aim of this
research his to examine the floor plan and volumetric-spatial design solutions of the
above-mentioned structural systems to build a multi-storey residential
buildings .Selected examples of modular buildings were shown and analyzed.

Abstract: This article discusses several ways of innovative shaping through the use
of natural zoo and aqua resources, waterfalls, plant species and others. These natural
features are appropriately combined with functionally-useful technical features and
are built into the volume of buildings, becoming an integral part of their structure.
Ways for innovative shaping are reviewed:
- floating skyscrapers resembling jellyfish (the AEQUOREA project. Underwater
eco-village); - modern construction technologies using drones and 3D printers (the 5
farmıng brıdges, third prize winner. Rebuilding 55 000 Plus-Energy “3D Printed”
Housing Units Fighting Poverty and Feeding Mosul);
- architecture resembling design of nature (Dragonfly. Metabolic farm for urban
agriculture). Main steps of innovative shaping of the projects are outlined.

Abstract: The summer house complex of the Karadjordjevic dynasty in the village of
Neresnica was built in 1930, and in addition to the holiday home, it also had the role
of controlling the leaching of gold from the Pek River in the immediate vicinity. The
Summer House itself was built in the characteristic style of Serbian folk architecture,
with the features of civic houses with better comfort.
The historical significance of the Summer House building and the architectural and
construction values of the entire complex have contributed to the legal solution of the
problem of taking care of this unique complex. Damage, collapse and instability of
certain parts of the Summer House threatened complete devastation and collapse.
The project of rehabilitation and reconstruction envisages measures for restoring the
stability of the building and reconstruction in the newly planned circumstances with
the function of a visitor center, a museum exhibition and halls for projections and
education.
The paper presents the applied measures for the rehabilitation of the structure from
the aspect of preserving the architectural and construction values of the building from
the period of construction.

Abstract: At the beginning of the second century, to conquer Dacia (the territory of
today's Romania), the Roman emperor Trajan ordered the construction of the longest
known bridge over the Danube until then. The approach to Trajan's Bridge on both
shores was controlled by two fortifications - Pontes on the territory of today's Serbian
coast and Drobeta on the territory of today's Romania. Inside Pontes, during
archeological excavations, the command building (Principia) was explored. In this
paper, the investigated remains of the Principle and the analogy with the solution of
the object of the same function in the neighboring Drobeta are analyzed. Based on
the remains and the registered spans of individual rooms, a proposal for three-
dimensional reconstruction of the building is presented.

Abstract: Having the knowledge about the mechanisms of building stone decay is of
а particular importance for the preservation of sites, recognised as immovable
cultural heritage. The report explains the mechanisms of building stone decay and the
necessity of surveying and understanding those processes. It describes the main
causes of deterioration and also the types of stone decay that can occur within the
different rock types. It shows the way the stone geology is influencing stones’
durability in time. Different types of decay that commonly characterise the building
stone are illustrated using real examples. The paper considers the feasibility of
preventing or at least controlling stone decay or damage in particular architectural
elements, buildings or structures recognised as listed buildings.

Abstract: Reinforced Concrete (RC) framed structures can appear varying and
alternating axial forces, compressive or tensional ones, during environmental actions,
e.g. seismic excitations. This also holds for highway overcrossings under transverse
horizontal seismic excitations, and especially for two-column framed-piers (bents) of
RC bridges. The influence of such alternating axial forces on the behavior of RC
shear-critical framed structures, seismically strengthened by tension-tie elements, is
investigated experimentally and computationally. The experimental investigation
concerns the flexure-shear behavior of the structural elements (beam, columns) in a
shear-critical specimen of a two-columns one-story RC frame subjected to a recycling
loading simulating seismic excitation. Additional permanent vertical compressive
axial loads on the two columns and gravity loads on the beam have not been applied,
in order to investigate the influence of varying axial forces and vertical earthquake
components. The specimen-frame is examined first as bare, and then as strengthened
by X-ties. Next, the computational simulations of these two experiments are
performed by a pseudo-dynamic relaxation approach simulating multiple
earthquakes. Particular emphasis is given to the operation of tension-tie elements,
which have a unilateral behavior. Finally, the investigation shows that the effects of
alternating axial forces can be very important for the seismic behavior of RC framed
structures and bridge-bents.
Key words: Reinforced Concrete Structures, Bridges Bents, Alternating Axial Forces,
Seismic Strengthening by Tension-Ties, Multiple Earthquakes Simulation

Abstract: The present research aims at evaluating the local site effects induced from
seismic sequence in the municipality of Romagnano al Monte (Salerno, Italy). To this
purpose, the Irpinia earthquake, occurred in 1980, has been selected as a reference
seismic event. Structural and typological characterization of the buildings stock have
been identified according to EMS-98 scale. Furthermore, a vulnerability assessment
of the built-up area has been carried out through a vulnerability-based approach
conceived for masonry building aggregates, identifying the buildings most
susceptible at expected seismic damage. Subsequently, based on the seismic
microzonation of the study area, a quantitative and qualitative assessment of site
effects has been done using proper amplification factors. Finally, based on the above
study, the seismic damage scenario has been plotted in order to more correctly
foresee the expected losses of the selected urban sector for appropriate seismic risk
mitigation plans.

Abstract: The paper presents analysis of the stress changes due to creep in statically
determinate composite steel-concrete beam. The mathematical model involves the
equation of equilibrium, compatibility and constitutive relationship, i.e. an elastic law
for the steel part and an algebraic-type creep law of Trost-Bažant for the concrete
part. On the basis of the theory of the viscoelastic body of Volterra-Boltzmann for
determining the redistribution of stresses in beam section between concrete plate and
steel beam with respect to time “ ”, two independent algebraic equations have been
derived. Analytical method based on the AAEMM of Bažant for solving of the
hereditary problem is present. Example with the bridge composite beam with the
model proposed is investigated. The creep functions is suggested by the model
Bažant&Baveja2000. The elastic modulus of concrete Ec(t) is assumed to be constant
in time „t‟.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to help prevent the repetition of disastrous
mistakes in the design and construction of load-bearing capacity of steel bridges with
box sections and contribute to engineering practice in this field. The cases describe
there, show that the main causes of catastrophe are bad workmanship and a failure to
recognize and think through accident scenarios. This theme put the questions whether
our engineering students are getting the education they need for their future work. In
the days before engineering science made it possible to predict the behaviour of load-
bearing structures, failures were the main source of education and progress for
builders. In the same way today, load-bearing structures must prove themselves in
practice. Machine and particularly car makers can run a pilot series to remedy defects
before going into production, but the one-off nature and size of building structures
make it impossible to test their loadbearing capacity and remove defects before
construction. The paper shows the significant influence of the Merrison Rules for the
explanation of the collapses of the steel bridges with box section.
Key words: steel bridges, box sections, load-bearing capacity, disastrous mistakes,

Abstract: Numerical finite element models using the Plaxis 2D software are created
for the study of the interaction between a buried arch concrete bridge and
surrounding soil deposit during the earthquake. The advanced Hardening Soil Small
constitutive model is applied for the description of the mechanical behaviour of the
soil. Pseudo static and time history dynamic analyses are performed. The features of
determination of the appropriate input material data are discussed. Seismic pseudo
static coefficients are determined according to the Eurocode 8. The dynamic analysis
is carried out using scaling real accelerogram Pernik-2012. The stress-deformation
response of the bridge and the bearing capacity of the soil are analysed.

Abstract: The built-up columns are generally used in industrial buildings, either as
posts for cladding when their buckling length is very long, or as columns supporting
a crane girder. The built-up columns are composed usually of two parallel chords
interconnected by lacings or battens. In the paper the special type of built-up column
will be analysed from Llentab Company. It consists from four parallel chords with
cold-formed C cross-sections which are interconnected by lacing in one plane and by
battens in two perpendicular planes. Such types of columns are especially convenient
for the relatively high light steel halls. Analysis of the behaviour of such column will
be performed: a) on the model with smeared equivalent bending and shear stiffness‟s
using analytical solution, b) on the discrete model using FEM and commercial
program ANSYS. The theory of the second order taking into account the initial
imperfections and the shear deformations will be employed.

Abstract: Despite the immense influence of the building shape on the wind flow, the
wind-based design is not yet a part of the daily architectural practice. With improving
digital design tools, however, the interactions of architecture and the wind flow can
be quite precisely analyzed very early in the design process. Buildings are constantly
exposed to dynamic changes in wind speed, direction, and surface wind pressure. A
wind-adaptive envelope could not only lead to enhancing the wind microclimate in
the building's vicinity, but also to reducing surface wind pressure and ultimately
using lighter structures. The shape-shifting building envelope, designed in this paper,
reacts to wind fluxes by adjusting its tensegrity-membrane geometry leading to
achieving the desired wind situation near the building. Moreover, the wind-adaptive
building envelope contributes to reducing the surface wind suction by almost 29%.

Abstract: This paper reports on experimental and numerical assessment of the blast
response of homogeneous and heterogeneous composite structures. The
experimentally observed effect of heterogeneity on the overall response of the
structure to blast loading is numerically assessed. Multiple approaches to the
introduction of material heterogeneity are proposed, modelled and tested.
The numerical results are confronted with the authors‟ original experimental program
on a full-scale concrete structure subjected to a near field explosion. Tests were
carried out on a set of specimens. All the specimens were subjected to the same
close-in blast loading from 25 kg TNT charges placed on steel chairs in the middle of
each slab. The chairs provided 450 mm stand off from the top surface of the slab
The paper aims to verify and explain the experimental findings. It was numerically
proved that the highly heterogeneous concrete-based composite bridge decks
consume the blast energy by layer delamination in the pre-determined damage zones.

Abstract: It is generally felt that the character of steel bridges from the first half of
the XXth century bridges testifies the craftsmanship both of designers and builders of
the past and they should be preserved as being part of the cultural heritage, as much
as buildings. In addition, the owners often consider alternative use of the
infrastructure, either more heavy load, widening or extension of the roadway.
Preservation of this type of bridges has become achievable, because of more detailed
and higher performance of analysis tools and assessment and higher performing
materials for strengthening. However, the main prerequisite for this is the search for
adequate concepts for repair and strengthening as well as the will to actually achieve
this goal. Two pending cases are being discussed. The first concerns a steel truss
bridge of 60 m span, built in 1906, the second one is a plate girder bridge across river
Dender at Oudegem, built in 1951. These bridges have different qualities and can be
adapted according to the new situation. However, the future of these two bridges is
uncertain.

Abstract: The report is dedicated to the assessment of seismic risk for the building
stock of the city of Sevlievo. The assessment of seismic risk is based on procedures
for integration of seismic hazard and seismic vulnerability of the bearing structures of
the building stock. The building stock is divided into three main groups, taking into
account the specificity of the building and the available information on the function
and occupancy of the buildings. The seismic risk assessment is made for three
scenarios corresponding to three levels of seismic excitation. On the basis of the
collected information on the building stock and the analysis carried out, the
assessment of direct damages and destruction was obtained. The distribution of the
buildings, respectively by number and by area, at the different levels of damage is
presented in graphical form. In assessing seismic risk, it is very important to know
the distribution of unusable and demolished buildings. These data are detailed for the
different groups of buildings. The assessment of economic losses as a result of direct
physical damages and destruction of the building stock of Sevlievo was carried out on
the basis of assumed costs of recovering 1 m2 of built-up area. Economic losses are
calculated on the basis of the results obtained for damages and destruction in the
three main groups of buildings.

Abstract: In the article, variants of the Stodola-Vianello iteration method are applied
to determine the Euler critical force for slender columns –through integration and
through the coefficient of Rayleigh. A numerical example is solved, and the obtained
result is compared with that obtained by the Euler formula. An assessment of the
accuracy of the solution is made at each iteration step. In order to achieve a
satisfactory accuracy of the final result, minimum number of iterations are
recommended for each variant of the method. The investigated column is hinged at
its upper end and supported by a Q-apparatus at the other. It is loaded with
compressive force at the upper end.

Abstract: It is obvious, that many steel structures, such as road and railway bridges,
have an enormous need for rehabilitation. The reason for this lies in an unexpectedly
strong increase of the heavy-duty traffic during the past decades. This leads to an
increased both static and fatigue loading and therefore to a considerable increase of
fatigue damages in steel bridges in the form of cracks. Since, for economic reasons,
the existing structures cannot easily be replaced by new constructions, the repair
often is unavoidable. The application of carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP)
using epoxy-based adhesives shows high potential in order to increase the remaining
service life of fatigue damaged steel structures. Compared to commonly used repair
methods the cross-sectional weakening caused by bolted reinforcement plates as well
as the notch effect and the negatively acting residual stresses caused by repair
welding can be avoided. One of the objectives of the current research project is the
investigation of the influence of adhesively bonded prestressed CFRP lamellas on the
reduction of the stress intensity at the crack tip and therefore an increase in the
remaining lifetime of steel components. This paper focuses on experimental
investigations on single-sided reinforced centre-notched specimens considering
different adhesives, prestressing grades as well as loading conditions. In the first test
phase of the fatigue testing for each specimen a 40 mm long crack is induced, which
in the second phase is reinforced using adhesively bonded CFRP lamellas. In the
third test phase the reinforced specimen is subjected to a fatigue test and the crack
propagation is measured using RDS propagation gauges. The experimental results
show a high potential for repairing fatigue damaged steel structures by the use of
adhesively bonded CFRP lamellas.

Abstract: Earthquakes are one of the most serious causes of degradation and
destruction of heritage buildings. The protection of the cultural heritage is related to
many structural problems. Very often the best techniques for the mitigation of the
seismic risk are in conflict with the preservation of the cultural value of the building.
The paper is addressed to the main considerations in the design of the earthquake
protection of heritage buildings and the solution of some specific structural problems.
The most important steps in the seismic design in this case are presented:
investigation for the existing structure (type of structure and actual state of the main
structural elements, quality and characteristics of the used materials, foundations),
modeling of the existing structure (choice of the best model for the calculation), static
and seismic analysis (choice of the adequate software for analysis), choice of the best
technique, design of the structural elements, detailing (new and existing structural
elements).
The different techniques for seismic retrofitting and their applicability for different
types of historical structures are presented and analyzed. The decision making for the
type and range of the interventions and the related problems are discussed. Finally,
some general conclusions and recommendations are given.

Abstract: The building of a delayed coking unit (DCU) plant, the section for crude
oil deep processing is planned to be completed in the Pančevo Refinery in 2020. It is
a process of improvement and conversion of heavy remains from the oil refining
process into lighter, liquid, and gaseous fractions during which concentrated
solidified carbon – "petrol" green coke appears as residue. The DCU is a project of
the "CB&I" from Brno, Czech Republic. Serbian civil engineers carried out a part of
the Structures Design. Building license has been issued based on the Design signed
by "Energoprojekt Industija". The Concrete and Steel structure of the Coke Drum

Abstract: The paper presents the reconstruction of road steel bridge, which was built
in the beginning of XX century and it is used till today for road transport. The Iron
Bridge over the River “Osam” in the town - Lovech was built in Belgium in 1906 and
was put into operation in 1907 as a road bridge in Bulgaria. The load bearing
structure is made of steel, and the connections of the individual steel elements were
made by rivets. The bridge has three spans: 20+24+ 20m and two massive river piers
and two coastal supports. Determination of the real condition of structure of
pedestrian bridge in Lovech as well as suggestion of possible repairing measures are
given in the paper. In order to define required technical documentation a complete
measurement of structural elements has been carried out. Afterwards, a detailed
visual inspection of accessible structural elements was carried out in order to
determine all existing damages. Based on all mentioned activities it has come to a
conclusion about current condition of the structure and possible repairing measures
have been given.

Abstract: Culverts are structures used to pass ditches, streams and canals below the
roads. By definition, they are classified into smaller structures (bridges) of openings
up to 5.0 m. In this paper the culverts of different cross sections, on the main roads of
the Raška District, were analyzed. A brief description of each culvert, with the
defined types of damage observed during the visit, or assessment, and the
suggestions for the repair, are given. About 60 culverts were surveyed where
different types of cross sections appeared. Tubular, plate, arched and a combination
of these three types of culverts were analyzed. After the analysis, it is concluded that
all culverts should be cleaned, arranged around the inlet and outlet, as well as
repairing of minor damage caused by weather changes. In some culverts, in addition
to the regular maintenance, a complete reconstruction of the inlet and outlet of the
culverts must be done as well as the replacement of the concrete culvert parts.

Abstract: In Bulgaria there are around 40 000 heritage sites, many of which have
lost their functionality over the years, becoming unused, abandoned and with nobody
to care of them - dilapidated. As is the case for most abandoned buildings, the biggest
challenge for heritage sites is the deteriorating state of their roofs. The resulting leaks
quickly lead to the destruction of the roof‟s timber structure and gradually of the rest
of the building. The compromised structure significantly increases the level of
investments necessary to bring the buildings back to life, so when an investor is
finally found, they have high expectations of the restored building. Moreover,
modern expectations often contradict the natural characteristics of the building. The
modern demand for underground parking space in central city locations, the need for
open-space concepts and the desired flexibility in organizing the areas brings
significant additional costs and engineering challenges. Civil engineers and
contractors are faced with the task of “opening up” the areas and even adding
underground level(s) for parking purposes, which poses challenges with designing
supporting structures and experimenting with building methods and practices, never
before used in Bulgaria.

Abstract: Classical and up-to-date conceptions in the soil mechanics for stability
analysis are applied for a building site in landslide terrain. The stability in situ
conditions and in construction and service phases of the building is estimated for the
fundamental and seismic combinations of actions. The finite element method with
strength reduction technique and the Fellenius method of slices according to the limit
state theory are applied. The Plaxis software and the GeoStudio software are used for
the analyses. A comparison is made between design solutions for the building site
which include different supports and cut-slope constructions.

Abstract: The old concrete or asphalt coatings intended to cover the sidewalk
surfaces have proved ineffective over time in supporting the movement of people
with disabilities in urban areas.
The need to replace with a more special pavement, with a guiding role on pedestrian
areas, as well as the need to adhere to the requirements of the European Union on the
safety of people with disabilities, led to the replacement of concrete with tactile
pavers, which have the surface marked with special symbols. However, the quality
requirements have been maintained.
Urban space must be accessible to any person, regardless of their physical, sensory
and cognitive abilities, and the characteristics of tactile pavements must adapt to
these requirements.
Modern technology consists in arranging routes with materials that are easy to
understand and follow for people with disabilities. The routes must be flat, rigid,
stable, without interruptions or obstacles to create confusion for users. On the route of
these touch pads there will be no gutters, joints, grills of the manholes. They will
always be delimited by the car or bicycle route.

Abstract: The purpose of the research carried out is to develop a new perspective on
a material resulting from steelworks. Currently, the blast furnace sludge from Galati
is used as granular material in road construction generally at foundation layer.
The bf sludge has the chemical and mechanical potential to be used as filler in
bituminous mixture, as a result of its particular composition wich does not interact
with bitumen and it has the ability to be crushed in particle fractions. The main
constituents of the bf sludge are different oxides, as calcium, aluminium, iron,
magnesium, manganese oxides, sulphide. The raw material is homogenous, with no
impurities and it is not toxic for the environment.
The characetristics of the filler sample was annalised and its results is compared with
standard specifications. The bf sludge was ground into very fine granules, under 2
mm, and then tested in laboratory in standard conditions.

Abstract: Energy consumption for heating / cooling residential and office buildings
type nZEB is closely related to the building envelope (opaque and glazed). One of
the measures to increase the energy performance of such buildings is to increase the
performance of the tire (hyper-insulation of opaque surfaces, increase the glazed
surfaces on south-facing facades for optimal use of incident energy and improve the
energy performance of glazed surfaces). The type of glazing and their technical and
energy characteristics determine the amount of light and heat transmitted from
outside to inside or vice versa (for example, the overall light transmission coefficient
affects the value of the natural light coefficient (KEO) of rooms). In the last two
decades, the technologies for the realization of glazed systems (windows, shading
systems, frames, control systems) have developed essentially: the windows with
Low-e coatings have appeared (effective for the cold season but real solar traps on
during the hot season), thermochromic, electrochromic, dynamically adaptive bottles,
with favourable behaviour for heat or energy transmission. In order to identify the
most suitable glazed systems that can be integrated in nZEB type buildings, the
authors studied, for different conceptual models, the dynamic behaviour of glazed
systems, respectively energy and light performance with the help of specialized
software WINDOW 7.5. The paper presents some results from these studies in order
to demonstrate the possibility of transforming glazed surfaces into energy-efficient
tire elements.

Abstract: Wood is an organic, hygroscopic and anisotropic material with high values
of mechanical properties at relatively low density. This makes wood an extremely
suitable material for the manufacture of various structures, especially in furniture and
construction. On the other hand, in outdoor, its hygroscopicand anisotropic properties
require it to be protected from the negative effects of weathering, water, moisture, UV
radiation and variable temperatures. Currently, there is an extremely rich variety of
film protective coatings for wood. This rich variety of coatings requires knowledge of
the properties and suitability of varnish systems in order to facilitate their film
formation and use. The aim of the study is to determine the effectiveness of water-
dispersion varnishsystems for the protection of wood surfaces exposed to external
weathering. Based on the results, guidelines are formulated for effective protection of
wooden structural elements exposed to UV radiation, moisture and
variabletemperatures.

Abstract: The study and measurement of work in construction is done with the aim
of obtaining a standard of work. In order to measure working hours, where
productive and unproductive time is required, in the case of longer-lasting processes,
such as concreting, it is appropriate to use the photo view method. The paper
describes the applied method of recording for the process of concreting the
foundation slab. All day recording of the process was completed over the five days
that the concreting process took. The process was broken down into operations for
which the duration was measured to an accuracy of 1 sec, and the data were entered
into forms created for this purpose. Statistical data processing determines the
productive and unproductive working hours in the case of concreting foundation slab.

Abstract: Old concrete coatings designed to cover playground surfaces have proved
dangerous over time, especially due to the frequent falls of children during play. The
need to replace concrete with a safer pavement that does not injure the body, as well
as the need to adhere to the European Union requirements on safety on playgrounds,
has led to the replacement of concrete or gravel with rubber materials, more flexible.
However, the requirements of strength and stability, operational safety, fire safety,
hygiene, human health, reactivity and environmental protection, thermal and water
repellent, energy saving, and noise protection have been maintained. The
characteristics of the pavers must adapt to these requirements. Refusal of admittance
and access as a safety precaution is problematic due to, for example, breach in
supervision or help by peers. Requirements of significant importance, such as, for
example, head and neck entrapment and protection against inadvertent falls, have
been written with this in mind. It is also recognised that there is an increasing need
for play provision to be accessible to users with disabilities. This of course requires
play areas to provide a balance between safety and the offer of the required level of
challenge and stimulation to all possible groups of users.

Abstract: Life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) is a functional method for the cost
estimation process that helps to find the best solutions to reduce total costs in the
context of increasing attention to sustainable development. LCCA is one of the
criteria for selecting the most economically advantageous tender in terms of cost-
effective, according to the Public Procurement Act (PPA), but it is little known in
Bulgaria and there are many unused practices for its implementation. This report
structures the methodology for applying the method, taking into account the benefits
and difficulties of its application. The aim of the study is to contribute to a better
understanding of LCCA and the use of this knowledge to improve the process of
implementing LCCA.

Abstract: The dynamic load plate test with light falling weight device is a method
for determination of the dynamic deformation modulus Еvd of the subgrade, the
different granular pavement layers, backfills etc. The method has found a wide range
of applications in the field of geotechnical and transportation engineering in many
countries and it is not only standardized, but also has established itself as a main
method for control of the degree of compaction and for assessment of the ground
deformation behavior. The main advantages of the method include the significantly
reduced total testing time without compromising the accuracy of the test results and
the lower requirements regarding human and technical resources. This article presents
the basic principles of the dynamic load plate test with light falling weight device.
This test method is not implemented in the Bulgarian national standards, which limits
the scope of its application in the engineering practice to occasional self-control
measurements. Introducing the dynamic load plate test with light falling weight
device and dynamic deformation modulus as an assessment criterion would be a
logical step in our engineering practice, which will have a positive impact on the
controlling of the compaction process.
Key words: Dynamic load plate, Light falling weight device, Dynamic deformation
modulus.

Abstract: The name " renovation" etymologically comes from the Latin word sānus,
which means "healthy". A specific problem in the renovation of multi-family
residential buildings in Bulgaria is the problem with ownership. Another problem
related to the specifics of ownership regarding the projects for renovation and energy
efficiency in multi-family residential buildings is related to uninhabited apartments in
habitable buildings. In view of the physical and technical circumstances, several
more groups of problems should be identified. The article examines in many layers
the problems before the renovation of multi-family residential buildings in Bulgaria.

This article presents the basic principles of the dynamic load plate test with light
falling weight device according to the standard in Austria. The requirements for the
device and the test method are based on many years of extensive theoretical and
practical research conducted by the team of Heinz Brandl, Dietmar Adam, Fritz Kopf
and Richard Niederbrucker. In Austria, the dynamic load plate test with light falling
weight device has been implemented in the national standards since 2008 and has
become a primary method over the static plate load test.
Introducing the dynamic load plate test with light falling weight device in the
Bulgarian national standards would be a logical step in our engineering practice,
which will have a positive impact on the controlling of the compaction process.

Abstract: One of the global priorities to reduce the risk of natural disasters on the
constructions is the assessment of their vulnerability. Various scientific fields are
related with the vulnerabilities and require an interdisciplinary approach. Wastewater
treatment plants (WTPs) are critical infrastructure in an urban area. Their potentially
increased vulnerability, regarding their construction failure can pose a severe threat to
human health and ecosystems. This study highlights the lack of a methodological
approach for the assessment of the seismic structural vulnerability of the WTPs. The
scope of this work is to propose a methodology, including the appropriate variables of
WTPs for the evaluation of their structural seismic vulnerability.

Abstract: Reinforced concrete has become a keystone for our civilization. More than
70% of the world population is living in buildings, containing concrete. However, its
mass production creates a serious environmental impact: the production of concrete
is responsible for a significant share of the consumption of energy and water, the
emission of greenhouse gasses, and the waste created globally each year.
This paper considers some possibilities for making the buildings with traditional RC
structure more sustainable. First, a short overview of the problem is made. Regarding
the life cycle stage of design, it is emphasized on the importance of effective design
and practical advice in this direction is suggested. Special attention is given to the
matter of durability. In short are discussed the opportunities for using recycled and/or
waste materials. Some aspects of the construction stage, the operation and
maintenance stage, and the demolition/disposal stage are also included. In the end, a
conclusion about the sustainability of buildings with RC structure is made.

Abstract: Zeolites are minerals that have unique characteristics that may be used in
the poultry bedding and treatment of residues, with direct and indirect effects on
wastes, the ambience of farm sheds and reduction of environmental pollution. This
study explores the application of natural zeolite (clinoptilolite) as an additive to
poultry litter for agricultural use. The effect of zeolite’s content on some physical and
mechanical properties of granules (tablets) of mixtures containing fresh poultry
manure, Tunisian phosphorite and ammonium sulphate were studied. Due to the
initial stage of this study of soil improvers, the test was conducted with a limited
number of compositions that have large differences in the amount of natural
clinoptilolite used. The high content of zeolites increases the moisture content of the
prepared granules and reduces their static strength.

Abstract: This article examines the possibilities for creating binders with a smaller
environmental footprint – the production of Portland cement, which is the most
widely used binder, associated not only with the consumption of huge amounts of
resources, but also with the generation of large amounts of greenhouse gases. The
challenges in the field of geopolymers and mixed cements are systematized: for the
most part they use industrial waste (ash, slag, microsilicon dust), the availability of
which is beginning to become limited; the thermal activation of shale and clay is
energy intensive and the chemical activation has a great impact on the environment;
the effusive volcanic rocks have a limited territorial scope. The possibilities for
utilization of some construction waste – ceramics and concrete are analyzed, as it is
known that crushed ceramics has been used in lime compositions since Roman times
to achieve hydraulic properties, and much of the cement in concrete fails to hydrate.
It has been established that this is one of the perspective directions of development of
the resource-efficient binders.

Abstract: The concept on sustainable societal development and the paths to its
practical implementation are key long-standing topics in the global political process.
That is the reason for their growing importance in the European research area during
the recent two decades, while the complex character of the studied processes
determines the interdisciplinary research approaches applied. Even though urban
aspects have been the object of growing research interest in the field, the impact of
the specific spatial/ urban dimensions of the processes often remains underestimated
and only partially studied. Based on personal experience in the European research
process and in the higher education in Urbanism, the author outlines key moments in
formulating research objectives and estimating empirical research results.
Conclusions are drawn about arising strategic challenges to doctoral programmes in
Urbanism in the country with a view to building capacity for interdisciplinary
interaction and intercultural dialogue.

Abstract: In the paper authors make attempt to show some commonly used
techniques for structural repairs and strengthening of existing concrete structures,
according a large and famous experience of the Eng. Predrag Popovic, President of
IABSE(2011-2013)-specialist in repair, rehabilitation, and failure assessment. They
include installation of shear collars, drop panels, supplemental reinforcing and
framing, and external post-tensioning. Column repairs require special attention to
shoring requirements. Their real behaviour is explained on the basis of analyzed
theoretical and experimental research and the possibilities for the practical

Abstract: Historically, urban dwellers are a small part of humanity as a whole, but
after two centuries of urbanization, approximately half of the world's population now
lives in cities, which has profound implications for global sustainability. Towns and
villages have a long history, with the topic of which came first - the village or town,
being disputed. Although there are many opinions about the origin of the city, the
traditional view is that cities were formed for the first time since the Neolithic
revolution.

Abstract: Elevators are one of the important structural elements of buildings, which
like stairs, ramps and escalators are part of the vertical communication between
different levels and half-levels. They can also act as accents in the overall vision and
design of the interior and exterior. In this research an overview and classification of
elevators in contemporary architecture at home and abroad are made. The basic
requirements for selection and design of elevator systems, arising from the current
regulations, standards and world practices, are systematized. The tendencies in the
development of elevators are outlined. The introduced new products and technical
solutions in the field of elevator equipment are also considered.
