Background
Recently, there have been manufactures who indicate engine horsepower measured with ISO 14396 in the catalogs
in addition to that measured with ISO 9249. Since ISO 9249 specifies Net measurement values whereas ISO 14396
specifies Gross measurement values, the ISO 14396 value is bigger than the ISO 9249 value. Because an ISO
14396 value is indicated on the cover page of recent Caterpillar catalogs, those who do not understand the
difference between the measurement criteria would think that Caterpillar's engines which are mounted on their
machines are one class bigger than those on Hitachi machines. In order to avoid such confusion, the different engine
horsepower measurement criteria are explained.
Standards
ISO 9249: Earth-moving machinery-Engine test code-Net power.
ISO 14396: Reciprocating internal combustion engines-Determination and method for the measurement of engine
power-Additional requirements for exhaust emission test in accordance with ISO8178.
SAE J1349: Engine Power Test Code – Spark Ignition and Compression Ignition – Net Power Rating.
SAE J1995: Engine Power Test Code – Spark Ignition and Compression Ignition – Gross Power Rating.
80/1269/EEC: Measurement of Engine Power
97/68/EC: Measurement of Engine Power.
UNECE R24: Uniform conditions of approval and reciprocal recognition of approval for motor vehicle equipment and
parts.
UNECE R120: Uniform provisions concerning the approval of internal combustion engines to be installed in
agricultural and forestry tractors and in non-road mobile machinery, with regard to the measurement
of the net power, net torque and specific fuel consumption.
Differences in Standards
Note; The values of SAE J1349 are likely to be 1% smaller than the values of ISO 9249 or 80/1269/EEC.
Output determined according to 80/1296/EEC is often indicated as “EC kW”.
97/68/EC is identical to 80/1269/EEC with the exception that the power of the cooling fan is excluded.
97/68/EC corresponds approximately to ISO14396 and UNECE R120 standard.
Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC requires nominal power to be determined according to ISO 14396 as indicated in
EN474-1.
Outdoor Equipment Directive 2000/14/EC requires net power to be determined according to 97/68/EC.
