Charles Sydney
Goldman was born in
Cape Colony, South Africa
in 1868. This colony was
occupied by the British in
1806 and then taken pos-
session of in 1815 after the
Napoleanic War. Much of
Charles’ life as a young
man was spent in Transvaal, a province
north of the Vaal River, building up his
fortune in mining. This area was
extremely rich in gold and uranium. The
world’s largest gold deposit was found
in 1886 at Witwatersrand, near the city
of Johannesburg. During the Second
Boer War, which was fought in 1899-
1902, Charles served as a war correspon-
dent for The Evening Standard newspa-
per based out of London, England. At
one point, he left South Africa to take up
residence in Britain, where he became a
businessman, author and journalist. He
also served as a Member of Parliament
from 1910 to 1918.
It was in 1919 that Major Goldman
purchasedd the townsite of Nicola, situ-
ated on Nicola Lake. It became a work-
ing ranch and was renamed the Nicola
Stock Farm. The area of the ranch that
was later to become parkland was used
to over-winter cattle. A number of the
old townsite buildings remain and
some have been restored.
Major Goldman gifted 92 hecatres of
this land to be used as a provincial part
and named after his two sons, one of
which had served in the Royal Navy.
Both sons had changed their last name
to Monck, which was a family name,
during the Second World War.
Monck Provincial Park was estab-
lished on September 28, 1951 to be used
as a campground, picnic site, boating
and numerous recreational activities.

GPS Do I look that shady? I just got a GPS for my car, and my first trip with it was to a drug-
store. Since the manual said not to leave it in the car unattended, I brought it with me into
the store. While there, the GPS came alive, and a voice stated, "Lost satellite contact." I
