lesson(cycle)

step 1
Determine the level of assessment
design online lessons
step 1: determine the level
of assessment

Use Miller’s piramid to determine

if you’d want to assess the student
on level 1: know, level 2: know how
level 3: show how, or level 4 does

step 2
Determine the most important
cross-curricular action that
you’d want the students to show.
design online lessons
step 2: the most important
cross-curricular action

include the following elements:

• Formulate an action that the students must
take
• The condition under which this skill must be
performed
• The means, tools and objects that a student
may use.
design online lessons
step 2: the most important
cross-curricular action

Example:
As a zookeeper (condition) the student
formulates a quarantaine plan for the staff
(action) keeping the excisting schedules and
tasks in mind (tools).

step 3
Divide the action in different
sub-skills and determine one
learning objective per sub-skill
design online lessons
step 3: sub-skills and learning
objectives

A learning goal contains at least:

• a concept
• an action verb
• and sometimes a situation in which it must be
applied

step 3: sub-skills and learning
objectives

Example:
At the end of the lesson, the student can draw up
(action verb) a draft schedule (concept) of the
day activities of employees (situation).

step 4
Put the learning objectives in
a logical order
design online lessons
step 4: put the learning objectives
in a logical order

Determine a logical order,

increasing in complexity.

choose the right activities
for your learning goals
design online lessons
step 6: choose activities

A good lesson or lessoncycle has 4 phases:

• Starting up (activitating prior knowledge)
• Acquiring new knowledge
• Processing new knowledge
• Round up (evaluate what has been
learned)

step 6: choose activities

On this Instagramaccount (@theactiveclass)

you can find a lot of activities to choose from
divided over these four phases of a
lesson(cycle)

include experts
design online lessons
step 7: include experts

In order to be able to convey a subject vividly,

it is recommended to invite an expert within
the topic that you are discussing during your
lesson(cycle).
design online lessons
step 7: include experts

The expert can:

• Give an online demonstration
• Give an online guided tour in his
workplace
• Give an online inspiration session
• Host an online Q&A with students

step 8
make a planning
design online lessons
step 8: make a planning

Make a schedule, thinking from the

perspective of the student. What does the
student experience during the lesson?
Alternate in teaching methods!

step 8: make a planning

Keep the following things in mind while

making your planning:
• Don’t overload students with work
• Alternate activity and instruction
• Start the day with a check-in moment and
end it with a check-out moment
• Facilitate differentiation through break-out
sessions.

design online lessons
step 9: choose your tools

What tools do you want to use for your

lessons? Explore the possibilities of tools like
MS Teams, Google Classroom, Zoom and
others and choose what fits your lesson plan
the best.

step 9: choose your tools

While choosing your tools keep the student in

mind: For them it’s best if they don’t have to
switch between different tools all the time.
Discuss with colleagues what tools you will
use and try to stick to it!
