BEGIN

As a grade five learner, it is important


that you learn about inferring the meaning of
unfamiliar words such as compound, affixed,
blended and clipped because it is a great
tool in finding the meaning of unfamiliar word
in the text read. In addition, there are other
ways in determining the meaning of the
words.
In this module, you will learn different
techniques in unlocking the meaning of
unfamiliar words. This will help you to
experience a meaningful reading
involvement that will give you a fulfilling
learning as well. Further, this material also
includes exercises in individual learning
activity sheets that will widen your
imagination in understanding unfamiliar
words read in sentences. The task intended
for you will surely improve your reading
experience.

What is a Compound Word?

Compound word is a word made up of two separate words joined together to


form another word.

Compound word is written in three different ways:

1. Closed compound word

2. Open compound word

3. Hyphenated compound word

Types of Clippings
1. Backclipping is the loss of one or more syllables at the end of a word.

Affixes – are syllable added to a root word that can change its meaning.
Prefixes – are syllable added at the beginning of the word.
Root word – is a word or word part that can form the basis of new word
through the addition of prefixes
