Dian fossey sat in the middle of a dense forest in uganda, africa. Near
her, there was a group of gorillas she had studied for several years. A huge
450-pound male gorilla named peanuts sat down near her. Fossey raised on of
her arms and scratched herself with the hand of the other arm. Peanuts did
the same thing. Then she held out her hand. Peanuts, who was six feet tall,
stood up. Anything could happen at this moment. Peanuts looked like he was
uncertain about what to do next. Then he reach out and touched fosssey
gently with his huge black hand. Peanuts became very excited. He turned
away and ran toward the other gorillas, beating his chest. Dian fossey just

though fossey fell and broke her ankle while visiting the leakeys, she was
determined to see the gorillas. Two weeks later, she went to the mountains
and saw the gorillas. The experience was everything she had hoped for. She
had to go back to the united state, but decided she would return to africa.
One day while he was on a lecture tour, dr, leakey visited fossey at the
hospital where she worked. He wanted her come back to africa and work
with him. By then, fossey was 34 and she thought she was too old. She also
had no training at all. But leakey insisted that he wanted a mature person
who was untrained and didn’t already have opinions about things. All he
wanted was someone with an open mind and a good pair of eyes.

One day, the park director sent six guards to arrest her. They put her under
“house arrest”, which meant that she wasn’t in prison, but she couldn’t go
anywhere. They did not allow her to continue her work with gorillas. The park
director said he did this to protect fossey. But the real reason was that he
Fossey had to think of a way to get away. She told the guards that she
had to go to uganda to register her car. She left behind all her clothes and
equipment. She brought only her notes about the gorillas. She got new
supplies and set up the karisoke reseach center in the mountains of rwanda,
just five miles from where she was before. For the next 13 years fossey
lived and worked with the mountain gorillas. She liked to be alone when she
observed the gorillas. The africans called her the “ lady who lives alone in
the forest “. Fossey had a new and unique view of gorillas in the wild. She
discovered that they live in groups with a large adult male as their leader.
They care for each other and will fight to protect an infant. In all the years

In general, she found they were peaceful creatures and called them “gentle

england to study for her Ph.D. In zoology. After she got her degree, she
returned to rwanda. With the help of some students, she conducted a count
of the gorillas. It was clear that there were fewer and fewer gorillas. As a
population of rwanda grew, people needed the land for farming, so they cut
down the forest where the gorillas lived. Also, illegal hunters, called
poachers, hunted the gorillas for their skins and to sell them to zoos.
Fossey was devastated when some of her favorite gorillas were killed.
She tired every way she knew to save them. By this point, fossey’s difficult
life in the mountain forest was affecting her health. She was very weak. So
she returned to the united states to rest and get her strenght back. She
raised money, wrote a book called gorillas in the mist, and worked on
television programs about the gorillas. Many people around the world listend
and wanted to help. Three years later, fossey returned to africa. By this
time, fossey had many enemics. The poachers, of course, hated her. The
farmers who needed the land for growing crops and raising cattle did not
understand her. The park directors who got money from the proachers were
againts her. Even the rwandan government didn’t like what she was doing.
On december 27, 1985, fossey was found murdered in her cabin. During
the night, someone had broken in and stabbed her. Dian fossey was buried at
the karisoke research station next to the graves of several gorillas who
were killed in that area. On her grave are the words the “ lady who lives
